Who is Penn State’s quarterback this year? No named starter 10 days before season opener
Penn State football is 10 days from the season opener but still technically does not have a starting quarterback.
Head coach James Franklin declined to name a starter Wednesday night following the team’s practice when asked about the kicker, punter and quarterback position.
“No,” Franklin said. “I love how you referenced it, but no we have not even done it as a staff yet.”
Sophomore Drew Allar and redshirt freshman Beau Pribula have been the perceived top competitors for the job this offseason after four-year starter Sean Clifford exhausted his eligibility. Franklin said there would be a competition for the job during fall camp, just as he said there is at every position.
The delay to announce the starter comes despite Allar getting the majority of the reps with the first team during fall camp and playing last season.
He threw passes in 10 games last year, including when he entered the season opener against Purdue. He threw for 344 yards and four touchdowns on 35-of-60 passing in reps that mostly came in blowouts. Pribula did not take a snap.
This is around the time of year where Franklin and the Nittany Lions have made an announcement about the team’s starting quarterback.
Clifford was named the starter on Aug. 23, 2019, while his predecessor Trace McSorley was named the starter on Aug. 24, 2016.
The Nittany Lions will take the field in Beaver Stadium in just over a week when they take on the Mountaineers at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 2.
