Penn State football WR Dante Cephas enters transfer portal, per source
Penn State wide receiver Dante Cephas’ career will only last one season. Cephas entered the transfer portal Tuesday morning, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
Cephas’ entrance into the portal was initially reported by 247Sports.
The Nittany Lion receiver transferred into the program after beginning his career at Penn State and underwhelmed with his production, especially early on. He started to produce at the end of the regular season, recording 11 of his 22 catches in the final three games before the Peach Bowl, including hauling in both of his touchdowns against Maryland.
Cephas’ upswing was short-lived as he did not play in the team’s Peach Bowl loss to Ole Miss. He never fully reached the upside he did at Kent State, where he recorded over 2,000 receiving yards in four seasons, including a 1,240 yard year in 2021.
With his departure, the Nittany Lion receiver room will be even thinner than it already was. Despite his struggles, Cephas saw plenty of playing time before the bowl and was a starter for a stretch of 2023. The program will have to add from the transfer portal or have players lower on the depth chart fill the void in snaps that is left by his departure.
New addition Julian Fleming, who committed Wednesday afternoon, will help fill some of that void. The former Ohio State wide receiver has been productive in his time with the Buckeyes, tallying 79 catches for 963 yards and seven touchdowns over four seasons, including 34 receptions for 533 yards and six touchdowns in the 2022 season.
