Former Penn State RB Saquon Barkley to sign with Philadelphia Eagles, per report

Gauging the NFL running back market can be difficult these days with the contracts being doled out to the position not rising with the increase of the salary cap.

One former Penn State won’t have to worry about that. Former Nittany Lion and New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley has reportedly agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles on a new contract. The deal is set to be for three years and $37.75 million, and could rise to $46.75 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Barkley would join the Eagles after beginning his career with the Giants, who drafted him second overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

In his six seasons with New York, he accumulated 5,211 rushing yards and 35 rushing touchdowns on 1,201 carries. He added 2,100 receiving yards and 12 receiving touchdowns on 288 receptions in that time.

Rarely did Barkley’s success coincide with team success, however, with the Giants only making the playoffs once in his time with the team. And for all of the ability he’s shown on the field, he isn’t always able to stay out there. Barkley has struggled with injuries at times in his career, missing 25 of the team’s 99 games during his time with the team.

Despite that, he is set to sign one of the most lucrative contracts at his position in the league, with his average salary slated to rank in the top five in the NFL at running back.

Signing with the Eagles means he will play his former team, the Giants, twice per season.
