Penn State will begin the season as a top 10 team in the country.

The Nittany Lions came in as the No. 8 team in the preseason AP top 25 poll, the first edition of which was released Monday.

Penn State’s ranking puts the program as the third-highest ranked team in the Big Ten. Ohio State (No. 2), and Oregon (No. 3) are ranked above the Nittany Lions, while Michigan (No. 9), USC (No. 23) and Iowa (No. 25) are ranked behind them. Washington, Nebraska and Wisconsin all received votes in the poll.

Two of Penn State’s opponents this season began the season ranked in Ohio State and USC, while West Virginia received 17 voting points.

The Nittany Lions will begin their season against the Mountaineers on the road in Morgantown on Aug. 31, their first opportunity to improve upon their initial spot. Their 1,060 voting points puts them 62 behind Notre Dame at No. 7 and 65 ahead of Michigan at No. 9.
