Penn State’s Abdul Carter, Tyler Warren win Big Ten awards, several other Nittany Lions honored

Penn State’s Abdul Carter and Tyler Warren have been two of the best players in the country this season and now they’ll receive some hardware for their efforts.

Carter was named the Big Ten’s Nagurski-Woodson defensive player of the year and the conference’s Smith-Brown defensive lineman of the year award winner — along with being first team All-Big Ten (coaches and media) — while Warren was named the Kwalick-Clark tight end of the year award winner — and also first team All-Big Ten (coaches and media).

Their accomplishments were announced Tuesday afternoon along with the rest of the Big Ten regular season awards.

Carter has been Penn State’s best defensive player after a slow start to the year, racking up 19.5 tackles for loss (third in the country, first in the Big Ten) and 10 sacks (tied for 12th in the country and tied for second in the Big Ten). He’s been dominant off the edge for the Nittany Lions this year and has been one of the many reasons it has one of the best defenses in the country.

Warren has been equally, if not more, important on the offensive side of the ball. The tight end is one of the most versatile players in the country, tallying 978 receiving yards thus far (second among tight ends in the country, third among all players in the Big Ten) along with six receiving touchdowns and doing damage in other ways, too. Warren has 21 carries for 189 yards and four touchdowns on the ground and has completed three of his five passing attempts for 35 yards and a touchdown. His play has earned him his conference awards and has put him firmly in the Heisman Trophy conversation.

Those two weren’t the only Nittany Lions to receive recognition Tuesday afternoon.

Starting guards Vega Ioane and Sal Wormley made second team (coaches and media) and third team (media), respectively while QB Drew Allar (coaches and media), RB Nicholas Singleton (coaches and media), OT Drew Shelton (coaches and media), OT Anthony Donkoh (coaches and media), Wormley (coaches), WR Tre Wallace (media), RB Kaytron Allen (media), and center Nick Dawkins (media) were all named honorable mention.

On defense, LB Kobe King and S Jaylen Reed were named to the second team (coaches and media) and CB A.J. Harris was named to the third team (coaches and media).

LB Tony Rojas (coaches), DT Zane Durant (coaches and media), DE Dani Dennis-Sutton (media), DT Dvon J-Thomas (media), CB Jalen Kimber (media), and S Zakee Wheatley (media) were named honorable mention.

On special teams, Tyler Duzansky was named third team longsnapper by the media and honorable mention by the coaches, Nick Singleton was named honorable mention by the media and kicker Ryan Barker was named honorable mention by the coaches and media.
