Who is the nation’s best tight end? Penn State’s Tyler Warren wins Mackey Award to end debate

Penn State’s Tyler Warren is officially the nation’s best tight end.

The Nittany Lion was awarded the John Mackey Award — which annually goes to college football’s top TE — during Thursday night’s College Football Awards Show on ESPN.

Warren was a dynamic threat for the Nittany Lions all season, finishing the year with 1,062 receiving yards on 88 catches, along with six receiving touchdowns. He set records for Penn State when it comes to career receiving touchdowns by a tight end (17) and receiving yards and receptions in a season for a tight end.

The tight end contributed on the ground and in the air as well, carrying the ball 23 times for 191 yards and four touchdowns while completing 3-of-5 passing attempts for 35 yards and another score.

Warren was the primary target for the Penn State offense all season, helping the team go 11-2 to this point and make an appearance in the Big Ten title game. He and the rest of the Nittany Lions will look to continue the season on Dec. 21 when they take on the SMU Mustangs in the first round of the College Football Playoff. A win there would give PSU a berth into the quarterfinals and a matchup with Boise State.
