Penn State football defensive end Max Granville out with long-term injury

Penn State will be without a promising young defender for an extended period of time.

Defensive end Max Granville is out with a long-term injury, James Franklin said Thursday afternoon. Granville suffered the injury while he was working out at home over summer break, according to the Penn State head coach.

“Obviously not an ideal situation,” Franklin said. “My heart breaks for the kid and the family. Obviously not what we wanted or needed either.”

The defensive end saw increased playing time as the 2024 season went on, picking up snaps from Abdul Carter when Carter suffered an injury during the Fiesta Bowl. He was expected to play an even larger role in the 2025 defense under new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.

Granville was originally set to enroll with the program before the 2025 season, but changed his plans last year and enrolled a year early to spend 2024 with the team. He redshirted despite playing in seven games thanks to a rule that does not count postseason games toward players’ redshirt status.

He was likely to be the third defensive end in the team’s rotation this season behind Dani Dennis-Sutton and Zuriah Fisher.
