Penn State football’s star freshman DE reportedly set to hit transfer portal

Penn State defensive end Chaz Coleman, who has three years of eligibility remaining, plans to enter the transfer portal to potentially leave Happy Valley, according to multiple reports.

Coleman, a true freshman, played in nine games this season and left an indelible impact. He finished with a sack, three tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble — while his potential caused teammates and fans alike to peg Coleman as the Nittany Lions’ next-great defensive player.

On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Coleman was a priority for new coach Matt Campbell. Nakos was also the first to report on Coleman’s transfer portal plans.

Coleman is the third known Nittany Lion who plans to hit the portal, which will open from Jan. 2-16. Tight end Joey Schlaffer was technically the first when he departed last month, and CBS Sports reported last week that cornerback Elliot Washington II also intended to hit the portal.

The 6-foot-4, 246-pound prospect was one of just two true freshmen before the season to earn a “green light,” or how former coach James Franklin referred to burning a redshirt. Cornerback Daryus Dixon was the other.

Coleman came into Penn State as a four-star prospect from Warren G. Harding High School (Ohio). At the time, On3 rated Coleman as the No. 203 overall prospect in the nation and the No. 25 EDGE player.

On3 currently ranks as the No. 2 overall player in the transfer portal and as the top EDGE in the portal.
