Penn State football: Zettel, Lucas earn spots on Nagurski, Outland Awards watch lists

UNIVERSITY PARK Senior defensive tackle Anthony Zettel and senior safety Jordan Lucas were named to more preseason awards watch lists Friday.

Zettel is a contender for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy for the National Defensive Player of the Year, and for the Outland Trophy, given to the nation’s top interior defensive lineman. Lucas was also among the nominees for the Nagurski Trophy.

Zettel is also a nominee for the Bednarik Award and logged career highs last season in tackles-for-loss (17.0) and sacks (8.0). He also had three interceptions, the most by a Penn State defensive lineman since 1959.

Lucas was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection last season and returns as a leader in the secondary this year.

The annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet, presented by ACN, will be held on Dec. 7 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte. A notable winner of the Nagurski Trophy from Penn State was current NFL player Devon Still, in 2011.

The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee, will be held on Jan. 14, 2016 in Omaha, Nebraska.
