BTN.com honors Penn State football’s Nassib, Barkley

More honors have rolled in for Carl Nassib and Saquon Barkley.

BTN.com named Nassib the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year while Barkley is the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Nassib is a finalist for a number of national awards: the Lombardi Award (nation’s top lineman or linebacker), Nagurski Trophy (nation’s top defensive player), Bednarik Award (nation’s top defensive player) and Burlsworth Trophy (top player that started his career as a walk-on). He leads FBS in sacks (15.5) and forced fumbles (6) and is second in tackles for loss (19.5), which leads the Big Ten. His sack total also is a single-season Nittany Lion record.

Barkley finished the regular season with 1,007 yards, breaking the program record of 1,002 for a Penn State freshman set by DJ Dozier in 1983. Barkley’s seven touchdowns also matches Dozier’s Nittany Lion freshman standard.

Also, Nassib and Austin Johnson each were named to BTN.com’s All-Big Ten team.

Penn State, which closed the season with a 55-16 loss to Michigan State on Saturday, will learn which bowl game it will play in next Sunday.
