Former PSU football player elected to Hall of Fame as coach

Bill Bowes, who played at Penn State from 1962-64, was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach, the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame announced Friday.

The 2016 class, which includes 14 players and two coaches, will be inducted Dec. 6.

Bowes was chosen for his accomplishments as a coach at the University of New Hampshire. Bowes finished with a 175-106-5 record as the head coach at New Hampshire from 1972-98, making him the winningest coach in Yankee/Atlantic 10 Conference history. The Wildcats won four Yankee Conference championships and went to the NCAA playoffs four times under Bowes.

He also earned conference Coach of the Year honors in 1989 and 1994.

Bowes was a captain at Penn State in 1964 and was a graduate assistant for the Nittany Lions in 1965.
