Former Penn State men’s hockey captain Brandon Biro signs NHL deal with Buffalo Sabres
Penn State’s captain is headed to the NHL.
Brandon Biro signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday morning, becoming the fifth Nittany Lion in program history to sign an NHL deal.
“This is definitely a dream come true for both myself and my family,” Biro said in a press release. “I want to thank coach Gadowsky and the rest of the coaching staff for believing in me and for giving me an opportunity to be successful and move on to the next level.
“I am truly going to miss putting on the Penn State jersey with my teammates every day and will miss playing in front of the best fans in college hockey at Pegula Ice Arena. It was an honor to play for Penn State these last four years.”
The Alberta native is leaving Penn State fourth on the all-time points list with 116, even with missing nine games this season due to injury. Despite the injury, the senior tallied 25 points in 25 games for his fourth straight season of more than 20 points.
Biro was an All-Big Ten honorable mention in the 2018-19 season after posting 40 points.
“From the day he stepped on campus, Brandon has consistently worked hard to improve every aspect of his game,” coach Guy Gadowsky said in a release. “We are very proud and excited for Brandon and look forward to seeing his success with the Sabres.”
Andrew Sturtz, Casey Bailey, Eamon McAdam and Vince Pedrie are the other four former Penn State players to sign an NHL deal following their careers at Penn State.
The Buffalo Sabres are owned by Terry Pegula, who donated $102 million in 2010 to Penn State in order for the school to launch a Division I hockey program and has Pegula Ice Arena named after him.
