Penn State men’s ice hockey stumped by No. 12 Ohio State goalie Jakub Dobeš, shut out 6-0
It’s hard to sweep any Big Ten hockey team, especially one of the best teams in the country.
On Friday night, Penn State freshman Ben Schoen tied the game in the third period and finished off No. 12 Ohio State with the game-winning conversion in the shootout.
Things went quite a bit differently on Saturday as the Nittany Lions were defeated 6-0. on Saturday.
Senior Nittany Lions goalie Oskar Autio allowed all six goals and was replaced by sophomore Doug Dorr late in the game.
Autio allowed two goals in each period. Penn State head coach Guy Gadowsky believes that leaving Autio in wouldn’t be conducive to building his confidence and he didn’t want backup Liam Souliere to enter the game in a blowout, paving the way for Dorr to receive his first collegiate minutes.
“One, I felt that we could use the lesson, but I felt we were mentally getting frustrated and I thought that allowing grade-A chances again,” Gadowsky said. “I didn’t think it was fair to Oskar to leave him in, and I didn’t think it was necessarily fair for Liam (Souliere) to be put in. I thought it would be a great opportunity for Doug.”
Ohio State freshman goalie Jakub Dobeš finished with 51 saves. The 6-foot-4 goaltender made save after save, causing frustration on the Penn State bench. While the Nittany Lions outshot the Buckeyes 51-27, they had nothing to show for it.
“Every time you’re on the losing end, it stinks,” Penn State senior defenseman Clayton Phillips said. “Obviously, it doesn’t feel good. We got a little kick in the stomach. We’ll take a look at it, figure out what we need to clean up and get back to work here this week.”
Ohio State took a 1-0 lead in the first period with Wise (12:10) scoring the first of his goals with Cole McWard and Will Riedell on the assists. Wise went on to score his ninth goal of the season (2:23) off of an assist from Michael Gildon, giving Ohio State a 2-0 lead.
While Penn State continued to attack in the second period, the Nittany Lions were stymied by Dobeš’ goaltending. The Ohio State defense clamped down on the Nittany Lions even further, and it allowed for more odd man rushes on the offensive end for the Buckeyes.
Cam Thiesing passed on to Joe Dunlap for the score with 18:02 remaining in the second period for a 3-0 Ohio State lead. The Buckeyes netted another goal with James Marooney (7:57) scoring off of assists from Quinn Preston and Georgii Merkulov for 4-0 advantage in the second period.
Ohio State went on to score on a power play with 18:53 remaining in the third period. McWard assisted Mason Lohrei to put them up 5-0. And the Buckeyes put the icing on the cake with the sixth goal with Tate Singleton (5:19) scoring off of assists from Travis Treloar and Gustaf Westland.
Penn State (14-13-1) will head to South Bend, Indiana, to take on Notre Dame (18-8) in a two-game series beginning on Friday.
