Public ice skating kicks off at Beaver Stadium before hockey games. Here’s a look
Despite the bitter cold, many people were out skating at Beaver Stadium Wednesday afternoon, a novelty available this year thanks to the outdoor hockey games planned for this weekend.
Penn State offered four public skating sessions around the upcoming outdoor hockey game, and they quickly sold out. Each session could hold 250 people, according to the registration site.
The men’s hockey team will compete in an outdoor hockey game against Michigan State at 1 p.m. Saturday. The women’s varsity team will play at 1 p.m. Friday, and plans have been made on other days to include other hockey-playing members of the community, such as the State College Youth Ice Hockey Association’s Icers teams and Penn State’s club hockey team. Between big-name concerts and sporting events, it is shaking out to be a busy week in Happy Valley.
This is the first time Beaver Stadium will be used for an outdoor hockey game. Previously, logistical and facility constraints largely prevented an outdoor hockey game at Beaver Stadium from happening. But with the winterization of the stadium ahead of the 2024 season’s home College Football Playoff game, a lot of those constraints were eliminated.
