Penn State women’s hockey made history Friday afternoon, shutting out Robert Morris in the first Division I game ever played at Beaver Stadium.
The No. 4 Nittany Lions beat the Colonials 3-0, with goals by McKenna Walsh, Maddy Christian and Grace Outwater. The game also set a Penn State women’s hockey single-game attendance record, with 1,838 gathered in temperatures that hovered around 10 degrees to cheer on the team.
The game started at 1 p.m. and ended around 4 p.m., lasting at least 30 minutes longer than a typical college hockey matchup because of numerous pauses for crews to fix issues with the ice rink. A Penn State athletics department spokesperson explained a lot of variables can impact the ice — such as cloud cover, wind and temperature fluctuations — but he did not anticipate any delays for Saturday’s men’s game.
