Long road trip yields win for Nittany Lions
The Penn State men’s hockey team got a solid road win late Friday night.
Another strong showing from the offense was backed by some solid goaltending by Eamon McAdam in a 5-2 win over Alaska-Anchorage at Sullivan Arena.
Andrew Sturtz scored a pair of goals, while one each came off the sticks of Ricky DeRosa, Curtis Loik and Kenny Brooks as the Nittany Lions (7-2-2) won their fourth straight. The team has netted at least four goals in seven games this season, winning six of them.
McAdam made 19 saves for the win, allowing goals only to Dylan Hubbs and Nicolas Erb-Eckholm in a quick stretch in the second period.
Olivier Mantha made 26 saves as the Nittany Lions were held to a season-low 31 shots in the game. Penn State entered the game averaging a nation-best 47.1 shots per game.
Sturtz started the scoring 8:01 into the game, taking Kevin Kerr’s feed and blasting the puck into the top corner of the net.
Sturtz scored again 89 seconds later, racing in on a shorthanded breakaway to beat Mantha for the freshman’s sixth goal of the season.
The two-goal lead disappeared quickly.
The Seawolves answered with two goals 29 seconds apart, first from Hubb knocking in a rebound after a Penn State turnover, then from Erb-Ekholm deflecting a Tad Kuzun shot to tie the contest.
DeRosa put the Nittany Lions back in front 3:42 into the second, and Loik took the margin back to two goals as he finished off a 2 on 1 break.
Brooks added an insurance goal with just over three minutes left, converting a feed from Alec Marsh, who took a hard elbow on the play.
