McAdam helps Penn State complete sweep of Wisconsin

Eamon McAdam had a spectacular night in the net – and even picked up an assist.

It helped wrap up a weekend sweep of Wisconsin on Saturday evening at Pegula Ice Arena.

Eric Scheid scored twice, McAdam made 39 saves and the Penn State men’s hockey team dropped Wisconsin 4-1.

Curtis Loik and Andrew Sturtz also scored for the No. 15 Nittany Lions (15-4-3. 5-1 Big Ten), who have won six straight against the Badgers (4-10-6, 1-5-2-1).

Luke Kunin was the only one to beat McAdam and Matt Jurusik stopped 37 shots.

Loik had an easy tap-in for the opening goal, on the doorstep after Scheid flew in from the side for the first attempt on Jurusik.

It was the team’s first power play goal since Dec. 29 against Clarkson. The Nittany Lions had been 0 for 13 with a man advantage.

The Badgers nearly scored seconds earlier on a shorthanded breakaway by Seamus Malone, but McAdam got just enough of the puck, then pinned it underneath him as he froze on the ice unsure exactly where the puck was.

Sturtz made it 2-0 about five minutes later. David Goodwin skated in from the side and fired a shot that was blocked, with the puck bouncing to Sturtz in the slot. He slid to his right wide of the net and picked his spot in the top corner of the net.

McAdam had denied Kunin spectacularly several times earlier, and later, but the freshman finally beat the goalie with a shorthanded goal in the second, banking the puck in on a breakaway.

Scheid netted his score while Penn State was on a 5 on 3 power play, knocking home the rebound while falling to the ice in front of the net.

Then, while killing a penalty late in the game, McAdam fired the puck to the neutral zone and it danced on the ice while the Badgers were making a line change. Scheid picked it up and broke in alone on Jurusik, slipping the puck under his pads and giving the Nittany Lion goalie his second career assist.

Notes: Penn State hits the road next weekend, visiting Ohio State for the team’s first Big Ten road games of the season. … A full house of 6,156 was on hand for the 29th straight sellout, and 48th in 51 home games since the building opened.
