Virginia blanks Penn State women’s soccer in NCAA tournament

The Penn State women’s soccer team managed just two shots on goal in a 3-0 loss to No. 15 Virginia in the second round of the NCAA tournament Friday.

The defending national champion Nittany Lions finished their season with a 12-5-4 record.

Virginia took control with its first goal 54 seconds into the game.

Meghan Cox found the back of the net on a header to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. Betsy Brandon scored in the 23rd minute and Taylor Ziemer added the final goal in the 75th minute.

Amanda Dennis had six saves for Penn State, while Morgan Stearns made two saves for Virginia.

Virginia will take on No. 5 Georgetown in the third round at noon Sunday. Georgetown beat Rutgers 2-0 on Friday.
