Penn State men’s soccer: Nittany Lions endure long delay, shut out Rutgers

After enduring a delay longer than the game itself, Penn State blanked Rutgers 2-0 Saturday night at Yurcak Field.

A power outage at halftime forced a dalay of more than two hours as the teams waited for repairs.

Brian James drilled the ball into the net 9:03 into the game from the top of the penalty box after taking a feed from Connor Maloney for the first score. The goal ended a drought of two straight shutout losses and a run of 263 minutes without a goal for the Nittany Lions (5-3-2, 2-1-1 Big Ten). Hours later, and with 1:24 left, Riley Grant added the insurance goal.

Matt Bersano made three saves for the shutout in a game filled with 20 fouls and five yellow cards. Rutgers (4-4-1, 1-3) outshot Penn State 20-8.

Penn State returns home Friday night for a showdown with Maryland at Jeffrey Field.
