Buckeyes hold off Nittany Lions in women’s volleyball

Penn State saw a late lead evaporate in a five-set loss to Ohio State at St. John Arena on Saturday night.

Taylor Sandbothe put down 25 kills as the Buckeyes outlasted the No. 10 Nittany Lions 25-23, 15-25, 19-25, 25-22, 18-16. Penn State led 11-8 in the fifth set but could not hold on.

Haleigh Washington had a big night for the Nittany Lions (19-8, 11-5) with 19 kills on .621 hitting to go with four blocks, and Simone Lee also rocked in 19 kills. Heidi Thelen added 11 kills and Ali Frantti notched nine, with 55 assists and three aces for Abby Detering, 23 digs for Kendall White and 12 digs for Keeton Holcomb.

Penn State hit .297 as a team, won the blocking battle 7-6 and led in aces 7-3, while the Buckeyes led in kills (68-65) and digs (70-58) while hitting .284.

The Nittany Lions stay on the road with a visit to No. 1 Nebraska on Wednesday.
