Stevie Mussie leaves PSU volleyball for Arizona State
Stevie Mussie was named head coach for the Arizona State women’s program on Wednesday, departing after two seasons as an assistant coach at Penn State.
Mussie, who played collegiately at Washington, helped the Nittany Lions to the national championship in 2014 and to a trip to the NCAA regional semifinals last season.
“The hiring of Stevie Mussie at Arizona State is a terrific opportunity for Stevie to lead her own program in one of the nation’s premier conferences,” Penn State head coach Russ Rose said. “Although Stevie was with us for two seasons, I felt that she had all of the tools to succeed as a head coach and wish her and the Sun Devils great success.”
Rose, who received a five-year contract extension after last season ended, still has associate head coach Salima Rockwell on his staff as well as volunteer assistant Shawn Sangrey. The program also has to fill its director of operations position after Jesse Tupac left to become an assistant coach at Denver.
Mussie is the seventh coach in the Sun Devils’ history, replacing Jason Watson, who led the team to a 19-12 record and an NCAA tournament berth before leaving for Arkansas.
