MMA event featuring 2 former Penn State wrestlers could be coming to campus
Talks are currently underway for Penn State’s campus to host a live Bellator MMA event — which would feature former Nittany Lion wrestlers Phil Davis and Ed Ruth — later this year, according to a report from ESPN.
The network’s Brett Okamoto, who hosts the weekly MMA-centric podcast 5ive Rounds, tweeted Monday about the potential plan. He cited Bellator MMA President Scott Coker as informing him about the talks.
Penn State did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
Ruth, a three-time NCAA wrestling champ, signed with Bellator in 2015. The 26-year-old middleweight kicked off his professional MMA career in November 2016 and, since then, has gone 3-0 with three TKOs.
Davis has been in MMA a bit longer. The four-time All-America wrestler — who won the NCAA title at 197 pounds — started his career the same year as his 2008 wrestling championship. His MMA record, which includes UFC bouts, is 17-3 (with one no-contest) and he is the current Bellator Light Heavyweight Champ.
No potential time, date and location have yet been announced as talks are still on-going.
This is neat. Per @ScottCoker, talks underway for a live event at Penn State campus in 2017. Would feature PSU alums Phil Davis and Ed Ruth.
