Penn State wrestling still atop coaches poll after its 1st week of duals

With dominating wins last week over Army West Point and Bucknell, Penn State maintained its No. 1 ranking in the first poll since its 2017-18 dual season began.

Penn State is ranked No. 1 with 400 points — and all 16 first-place votes — in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association/USA Today Wrestling Coaches Poll, released Tuesday afternoon. The Nittany Lions’ 16-point lead over No. 2 Ohio State remains unchanged from the previous poll on Oct. 31.

Oklahoma State (366 points) Michigan (352) and Missouri (332) round out the top 5. The biggest shakeups in this week’s early season team rankings come from N.C. State (3-0) jumping Iowa (0-0) to No. 7, and Rutgers (3-0 jumping Arizona State (1-1) after the Sun Devils’ 30-12 loss Sunday to the Buckeyes.

Things remain unchanged for the Nittany Lions in the Intermat NCAA Division I individual rankings. Penn State still boasts four No. 1 rankings, with Zain Retherford, Jason Nolf, Vincenzo Joseph and Bo Nickal all still at the top of their respective weight classes. Mark Hall is at No. 2, Nick Nevills at No. 3, Matt McCutcheon No. 4, and Corey Keener is ranked 14th.

Despite two solid wins this week, junior Jered Cortez remains unranked. With the Keystone Classic at Penn coming up Sunday and the Southern Scuffle in the beginning of January, a good tournament run could be enough to get Cortez on the board. Also of note is that McCutcheon maintained his No. 4 ranking at 197, despite losing his starting spot for the first two duals to sophomore Anthony Cassar, who went 1-1 in his Penn State debut.

The Nittany Lions are back in action Friday when they take on unranked Binghamton on the road, then head to Philadelphia for the Keystone Classic on Sunday.
