Penn State wrestlers leading the nation in pins

Penn State wrestlers are good at pinning.

So good, in fact, that the Nittany Lions have four wrestlers ranked in the top 10 for the most falls in the NCAA’s most recent award standings for Division I wrestling, released Wednesday.

Junior Jason Nolf leads the nation with 14 pins — edging teammate Zain Retherford, who also has 14 but has roughly five minutes more fall time than his teammate.

Bo Nickal is fifth with 10 falls, and Shakur Rasheed is seventh with nine.

The NCAA acknowledged in an email that the fall times currently listed on their website are not accurate due to an external error. The number of falls, however, are what’s most important — and those remain on-point this week.

The NCAA presents three awards at the conclusion of each season: most falls, most technical falls and Most Dominant Wrestler.

Another Nittany Lion, freshman Nick Lee, ranks seventh in the nation for technical falls, tallying seven in 35:06.

The initial standings for Most Dominant Wrestler, which Retherford won in 2016 and 2017, will be released later in the season.
