How to watch Penn State wrestling’s White Out dual against Rutgers on national TV
While Centre County is preparing for a winter storm this weekend, Penn State wrestling is calling for “White Out” conditions inside Rec Hall as the No. 2 Nittany Lions take on Rutgers in a nationally televised Sunday evening dual.
Fans are encouraged to wear white for the 5 p.m. Big Ten clash, which will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
While a Sunday evening match — in between the NFL’s two conference championship games — might not be ideal timing for fans, Penn State coach Cael Sanderson is embracing the opportunity to promote wrestling on a national level, regardless of start time.
“If it’s good for the sport and you’re putting a match live on TV, then we try to make those accommodations,” he said Tuesday. “I think this was probably to make for a better TV time. Those kind of things don’t matter to me a whole lot. Whenever the match is or wherever it is, we just try to be at our best.”
The Nittany Lions are 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Big Ten, while Rutgers sits at 7-1 overall, 2-1 in conference competition.
Coming off a year in which the program crowned its first two NCAA champs in school history in Anthony Ashnault, who graduated, and former Nittany Lion Nick Suriano, who’s taking an Olympic redshirt, the Scarlet Knights boast a solid, young team with several up-and-coming wrestlers.
Rutgers has up to five projected freshmen starters, with two — in Nicholas Aguilar and Southern Scuffle champ Sammy Alvarez —nationally ranked by InterMat at No. 16 at 125 pounds and No. 9 at 133, respectively.
The Nittany Lions are the winners of the past four NCAA championships and are led by past national champion seniors Mark Hall (174 pounds) and Vincenzo Joseph (165).
