Penn State set to host 2021 Big Ten Wrestling Championships, per Cael Sanderson
Penn State coach Cael Sanderson confirmed Sunday afternoon that Penn State will host the 2021 Big Ten Wrestling Championships.
The Nittany Lions’ head coach was asked at the end of his postmatch news conference — shortly following the 40-3 win over American — whether Happy Valley was soon in line to host the conference championships. Sanderson kept it brief.
“Yeah,” he said, “we’re hosting the Big Ten next year.”
It’s not officially known whether Penn State will host the championships at Rec Hall or the Bryce Jordan Center but, the last time PSU hosted, the event was held at the BJC. It’s also not known when tickets will go on sale. At this early point, a lot is not yet known; Sanderson’s short comment Sunday was the first official confirmation of Penn State acting as host.
The 107th Big Ten wrestling championships will take place sometime prior to the 2021 NCAA championships on March 18, likely March 6-7 if the same trend continues.
Penn State has been rumored as the host for at least this past year, simply because it’s been more than a decade since the university last hosted. The BJC last welcomed the championships in 2009.
More than 12,000 fans attended over the course of that weekend, according to figures released by the university.
Penn State has won six Big Ten championships since last hosting. Ohio State has won three and Iowa’s earned two.
