Here’s where Penn State wrestlers rank after Nittany Lions beat Michigan, Maryland
Penn State wrestling saw small moves in the latest Intermat individual rankings, with two wrestlers moving up and one moving down.
Shayne Van Ness (149 pounds) and Josh Barr (197 pounds) each moved up one spot at their weights, with Van Ness going from No. 3 to No. 2 and Barr going from No. 4 to No. 3. Both wrestlers won their matches against Michigan and Maryland, with Barr knocking off previous No. 2 Jacob Cardenas of Michigan, dropping him from No. 2 to No. 4 at the weight. Van Ness took Nebraska’s Ridge Lovett’s spot at No. 2 after Lovett lost to Iowa’s Kyle Parco on Friday and fell to No. 4.
Braeden Davis fell from No. 7 to No. 8 Penn State after not wrestling against Michigan. He hasn’t wrestled since Jan. 24.
The rest of the Nittany Lions stayed steady with Tyler Kasak (157 pounds), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165 pounds) and Carter Starocci (184 pounds) all staying at No. 1, Levi Haines (174 pounds) and Greg Kerkvliet (285 pounds) staying at No. 2, Beau Bartlett (141 pounds) staying at No. 3 and Luke Lilledahl (125 pounds) staying at No. 7.
Kasak remained atop the 157-pound class despite taking an injury default loss against Maryland’s Ethen Miller.
The Nittany Lions will have two chances to maintain or improve their rankings this week when they head on the road to take on Ohio State Friday and then head to Illinois Sunday to take on the Illini.
Nittany Lions keep hold of No. 1
Penn State maintained its unanimous place atop the NWCA Division I men’s wrestling coaches poll, earning all 16 first-place votes once again after dominating Michigan and Maryland.
The Nittany Lions are now 12-0 on the season.
They’re joined by fellow Big Ten programs Iowa (No. 3), Nebraska (No. 5), Minnesota (No. 6), Ohio State (No. 8), Rutgers (No. 12), Illinois (No. 13), Michigan (No. 19) and Indiana (No. 21) in the rankings.
Maryland sits just outside the poll, receiving 14 voting points, putting them second among unranked teams.
Penn State remains one of the only undefeated teams in the country, joined by only No. 2 Oklahoma State as teams without a loss on the season.
