NCAA Wrestling Championships 2026: Penn State clinches 5th straight national title
For the fifth year in a row, Penn State will take home the national title from the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
The team clinched its fifth straight title in Cleveland on Saturday morning when Oklahoma State’s Troy Spratley lost to North Carolina State’s Vincent Robinson at 125 pounds in the consolation semifinals. The finals are set to take place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
The NCAA crown is the 13th of Cael Sanderson’s tenure in Happy Valley, which began in 2010 and has resulted in the team winning all but three team titles during that time. And this one will likely include something the last two have — Penn State breaking the record for team scoring at the event, with it projected to surpass its total of 177 from last season.
This is the longest national title streak the program has gone on, breaking the two previous streaks of four, which ran from 2011-2014 and 2016-2019.
Penn State will likely continue racking up accolades as the weekend progresses, with six wrestlers set to participate in Saturday night’s finals. If all of those wrestlers were to win individual titles, it would break the NCAA record of five, a feat PSU has accomplished twice under Sanderson’s stewardship. All six finalists — Luke Lilledahl (125), Shayne Van Ness (149), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165), Levi Haines (174), Rocco Welsh (184) and Josh Barr (197) — are the No. 1 seeds in their respective brackets.
And while the program’s title streak is impressive, it may be more impressive that it’s not likely to end anytime soon. In fact, it wouldn’t be a surprise if next year’s Penn State team is even better, with a chance of breaking the NCAA scoring record for what could be a fourth year in a row.
