Girls’ soccer
Payton Porter’s goal lifts State College to road win
After spotting Lower Dauphin the opening goal, the State College girls’ soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win Saturday morning.
Erica Feese scored late in the first half, and Payton Porter netted a penalty kick 11:40 into the second half for the winner.
Kristen Lenze made eight saves for the Lady Little Lions (8-4, 5-3 Mid Penn). Rachel Kerstetter had the Falcons’ goal.
Cross country
State College runs to 5th at Carlisle meet
CARLISLE Kileigh Kane finished 16th and State College was fifth as a team in a fast, talent-laden race at the Carlisle Invitational on Saturday.
Kane covered the 5-kilometer Carlisle High School course in 18 minutes, 42 seconds in the girls’ challenge race.
“To run that time was really incredible,” coach Rebecca Donaghue said. “She’s on pace to do bigger things.”
Teammates with top-50 finishes included Emma Simon (32), Cailin Saylor (42) and Gabi Bock (44).
The Lady Little Lions had 185 points, and University High of West Virginia won with 78. Race-winner Marlee Starliper of Northern York turned in the best 5K high school girls’ cross country time of the season at 16:50 — the second-fastest clocking ever for Pennsylvania, according to milesplit.com.
Also, the St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy girls finished 14th in the same race with 341 points, led by Sera Mazza’s 18:45 effort for 20th place. Julia Cusatis placeds 28th.
Carter Kauffman also was 20th, in 16:34, and the Wolves were 24th as a team in the boys’ champion race.
Bellefonte’s Pope takes 2nd at Bloomsburg
BLOOMSBURG Brett Pope finished second while Bellefonte was 21st as a boys team at the NEPA Invitational at Bloomsburg University.
Pope covered the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 43 seconds, finishing eight seconds behind Hazleton’s Franklin Cunningham in the 196-runner, 28-team event. Austin Melius was the next Red Raider in 18:11 for 38th.
Amaya Rothrock led the Lady Red Raiders in 21:39 for 28th, and Amber Shirey finished in 21:57 for 35th as the Bellefonte girls finished 15th out of 25 teams.
