Cross country

State College wins Mid Penn title

For the third consecutive year, the best girls’ cross country team in the Mid Penn Conference resides in State College.

Thanks to three runners in the top 12, the Lady Little Lions ran to the top spot again Saturday at Big Spring High School, collecting 75 points to hold off Hershey’s 91 and Carlisle’s 96.

On the boys’ side, a pair of top-five finishers helped State College to second with 101 points to trail Carlisle’s 76.

Cailin Saylor led the Lady Little Lions in 19 minutes, 46 seconds to take ninth on the 5-kilometer course. Emma Simon was two seconds behind for 10th and Kileigh Kane followed in 12th in 19:51. Gabbi Bock and Elli Haushalter were 27th and 29th, respectively, to round out the scoring runners.

“The girls ran really tough,” coach Rebecca Donaghue said. “Everyone ran really well and it took everybody to get the win. Cailin Saylor did great job executing the game plan. She was aggressively responsive in the second half of the race.”

Mitchell Etter covered the trail in 16:13 for second place, and Owen Isham was fifth in 16:27 to pace the Little Lions. Erik Boethius (23rd), Joe Messner (25th) and Sam Horn (46th) finished the scoring five runners for the team.

St. Joe’s runs in NY meet

St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Carter Kauffman and Sera Mazza had top-30 finishes while running against some of the top teams in the eastern U.S. in the Manhattan High School Invitational.

Kauffman finished 26th in the Boys’ Varsity C race, covering the 4-kilometer course in 13:48 at historic Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The Wolves captured 21st as a team with 554 points in the 27-team race. Lowell, Mass., won with 43 points.

Mazza was clocked in 15:36 over 4K to take 27th in the Girls’ Eastern State Championship. Julia Cusatis and Maggie Urban added 42nd- and 58th-place results, respectively. The Lady Wolves took 16th out of 17 teams with 332 points. Fayetteville-Manlius, near Syracuse, N.Y., won with 22 points.

Boys’ soccer

Juniata romps over BEA

Bald Eagle Area fell behind early and could not recover in a 5-0 loss to Juniata on Saturday morning.

Chase Lehman scored the first of his two goals in the fourth minute for the Indians (8-5-4), while Tad Shellenberger also netted two scores and Austin Spickler added the other goal.

“It was just one of those days,” BEA coach Jason Bair. His Eagles (12-3-1) will try to capture the Mountain League title this week, closing the league schedule hosting Tyrone and league-leading Bellefonte.

Girls’ soccer

State College rolls over Altoona

A stifling defense helped State College blank Altoona 3-0 at Memorial Field.

Myca Ingram scored twice and Paytron Porter had a goal and an assist as the Lady Little Lions (10-5) outshot the Lady Mountain Lions 19-4. Kristen Lenze and Jenny Mejia combined for three saves and the shutout.

Josie Vidic and Ellen Lee also picked up assists.

Lady Raiders pull away from Lady Eagles

Bellefonte scored three second-half goals to drop Tyrone 4-1 Friday.

Lynnsey Kauffman scored two goals for the Lady Raiders (9-6, 9-3 Mountain League), with one each for Mallorie Smith and Alana Masullo. Ashley Bell picked up a pair of assists and Gabbie Pighetti made four saves for the win.
