State College team falls at districts

ALTOONA As the No. 3 seed in the District 6 Class 3A team championships, the State College girls’ tennis team advanced to the semifinals on a bye — but it couldn’t get past No. 2-seed Hollidaysburg.

Hollidaysburg swept the Lady Little Lions 4-0 Monday to advance to the district finals.

“Hollidaysburg is a solid team, and we played the best we could today,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “Unfortunately, we just couldn’t match up down the line.”

State College’s No. 1 singles player, Kelly Vanden, won her first set but did not finish her match.

The Lady Little Lions’ season is now over.

BEA wins in OT

TYRONE With 17 seconds left in overtime, Bald Eagle Area’s Addison Proctor found the back of the net — on a pass from Sarah Holler — to give the Lady Eagles the 2-1 victory.

BEA goalkeeper Charlee Harris made 13 saves in the winning effort. Tyrone out-shot BEA 14-9.

The Lady Eagles scored their first goal, in the second half, after Grace Holderman fired a hard shot that deflected off a defender and into the net.

“You could just see the momentum shift from that point,” BEA coach Jared Moore said.

Bald Eagle Area (6-9-1) will take on Bellefonte on Wednesday.

State College dominates

STATE COLLEGE Nine different Lady Little Lions scored nine goals in the 9-1 win over Mifflin County.

Emma Houtz started the rout just 1:45 into the game, while Maya Bokunewicz followed up with another goal two minutes later and Payton Porton scored less than four minutes after that.

State College out-shot Mifflin County by a 23-4 margin, while Lady Little Lion goalkeepers Jenny Mejia and Kristen Lenze needed to make just two saves in the victory.

State College (11-6) will next face Central Dauphin at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

CCCA gets close win

BELLEFONTE Ashley Kersteter and Morgan Bair both scored goals for the Lady Bulldogs in their 2-1 victory over Mifflin County Christian.

Bair’s score came with five minutes left in regulation.

Moriah Smith stopped seven shots to pick up the victory.

Grace Prep game ends in tie

STATE COLLEGE After a nine-day gap between games, thanks to a forfeit and rescheduling, Grace Prep opened up rusty during the 1-1 tie against Sunbury Christian.

Grace Prep had 20 shots on goal to Sunbury Christian’s one. The opposing goalkeeper, Becky Gingrich, made 19 saves while the Lady Storm’s goalie didn’t finish with any.

Tenaye Strauss prevented the loss after she scored in the 59th minute off a cross from Grace Prep teammate Sarah Watkins.

The Lady Storm will next square off against Juniata Mennonite on Tuesday.

SJCA falls in nail-biter

BOALSBURG St. Joseph’s Ana Legaspi led her team in attacks (24) and kills (15) — and tied for the team highs in blocks (1) and aces (2) — but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Wolves lost to Glendale in five sets.

Glendale won 25-12, 17-25, 16-25, 25-10, 15-5.

SJCA’s Aubrey Weiss had nine digs, and Ruthanna McMurtrie added a pair of aces in the loss.
