Tracking the area’s high school wrestling stat leaders through Jan. 21

The postseason is right around the corner.

In just under a month, the Class 2A teams — Penns Valley and St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy — head to Altoona for the District 6 Championships. The remaining Centre County wrestlers will hit the mat the following week for a run at their own district title.

This means there are not too many more chances left to make the top 10. So let’s see who made the most of their chances over the past week:

Pins

Simply put, the Wolves’ Ammon Ohl is a pinning machine.

Ohl was the initial county leader when the rankings came out Dec. 17 — and he hasn’t even come close to relinquishing that top spot. The freshman went 5-0 at this past weekend’s WSAZ Tournament in West Virginia with five pins on way to the 106-pound title. His new total is now 24 falls for the year. That’s 11 falls better than the trio of wrestlers tied for second in Bald Eagle Area’s Seth Koleno and Ohl’s teammates Zach Witmer and Keegan Rothrock.

Another one of Ohl’s teammates in Malachi DuVall collected three pins and launched himself into a tie for fifth. DuVall has 12 for the year and is tied with Bellefonte’s Cole Stewart and two teammates in Caleb Dowling and Ethan Kauffman.

Wins

With most of the county teams only having one dual or not competing at all this past week because of Mother Nature, St. Joseph’s wrestlers climbed the ranks of the wins category. The Wolves hold the top-6 spots with Witmer still leading the pack with 28. Ohl is one behind with Dowling and DuVall just behind him with 26 each. Kauffman (25) and Rothrock (22) round out the top 6.

The Eagles had two duals last week. Koleno, Garrett Rigg and Gage McClenahan all were perfect. Koleno and Rigg each were able to reach the 20-win plateau and are tied for seventh. McClenahan has 18 wins now and is tied for ninth with a pair of Red Raiders in Max Mondy and Ethan Rossman.

Technical falls

The Wolves’ Evan Courts makes his debut in the top 10 of any category this season. Courts opened the WSAZ Tournament with an 18-2 victory. After dropping into the consolation semifinals, he pitched a shutout while scoring 17 points before finising third at 145 pounds. Courts now has three tech falls to leapfrog into fifth place.

The top-3 wrestlers didn’t change in the category as Dowling (7), Penns Valley’s Baylor Shunk (6) and DuVall (5) are Nos. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Witmer is in fourth with four technical falls.

Major decisions & fastest pins

State College’s Owen Woolcott had an 11-3 major decision in the Little Lions’ dual with Harrisburg — his sixth. He is now tied for the lead with Bellefonte’s Ethan Richner, who only picked up a forfeit win in the Red Raiders’ dual with Clearfield. Woolcott’s teammate Lance Urbas collected a 13-3 major decision in the same dual and is tied for fourth with four.

There were no new times to the quickest fall list this week for the first time all season. It comes as no surprise as a wrestler needs to finish their opponent in less than 14 seconds to make the list.
