Wrestling

BEA takes Ultimate Warrior wrestling tourney title

ALLPORT Behind a trio of champions, Bald Eagle Area won the Ultimate Warrior Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at West Branch.

The Eagles tallied 167.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Mifflin County’s 148.5. St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy had two champions and finished third with 134 points, and Philipsburg-Osceola took sixth at 115.

Standing at the top of the podium for the Eagles were Gage McClenahan at 152 pounds, Garrett Rigg at 145 and Seth Koleno at 138. David Close added a second-place result at 195, Cooper Gilham worked his way to third at 108, while Dylan Bisel was seventh at 182 and Garrett Giedroc was eighth at 113.

McClenahan had a fall and two major decisions on his way to the finals, Rigg won two of his bouts by pin, and Koleno had three falls and a major en route to his title.

For the Wolves, Jacob Powers and Zack Witmer earned titles at 132 and 120, respectively. Amonn Ohl was second at 108, Malachi Duvall took third at 128, and Evan Courts was fifth at 145.

Kyle Taylor was third at 170 pounds to pace P-O. He was followed by Brandon Anderson (fourth, 195), Jordan Smith (fourth, 285), Chase Chapman (fifth, 120), Josh Hubler (sixth, 220) and Hunter Weitosh (seventh, 126).

Shunk wins tournament title

GROVE CITY Baylor Shunk paced Penns Valley by winning the 106-pound title at the Fred Bell Tournament, which included 33 teams.

Shunk was 5-0 as his Rams finished 11th overall.

Other notable finishers included Clayton Royer (126), who was a runner-up at 4-1, along with Abraham Allebach (160) and Dillon Covalt (220) — who both went 4-2 en route to fourth-place finishes.

Penns Valley will next take on Tyrone on Thursday.

Boys’ basketball

State College loses 1st game of season

CAMP HILL State College’s perfect season has finally come to an end.

The Little Lions fell to Reading 75-66 after struggling behind the arc for most of Saturday’s game at Trinity High School. Drew Friberg again paced State College with more than 20 points, but Reading saw five players reach double figures.

State College is now 16-1.

Girls’ basketball

Central edges BEA

WINGATE Central handed Bald Eagle Area a 44-16 setback Friday.

Kylie Metzger’s 14 points paced the Scarlet Dragons while Lacee Barnhart netted six points for the Lady Eagles.

Track & field

State College runs top 3,200 relay time in PA

NEW YORK A quartet of State College runners posted the top 3,200-meter relay time of the season for Pennsylvania at the Dr. Sanders Invitational on Saturday.

The Lady Little Lions’ Kileigh Kane, Elly Haushalter, Emma Simon and Esther Seeland were clocked in 9 minutes, 29.95 seconds at the New York Armory. The time bettered the previous low time in the state of 9:31.15 by Strath Haven.

State College was the only Pennsylvania school in the 10-team race, which was won by Padua (Del.), in 9:09.56. The invitation-only meet drew teams from across the nation and professional athletes.

State College falls for 1st time

UPPER ST. CLAIR State College suffered its first dual meet loss of the season, falling 101-82 to Upper St. Clair.

Matt Brownstead was a double winner for the Little Lions, with first-place efforts in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races. Jacob Whipple added a first in the 1-meter diving, Noah Witt took the top spot in the 100 backstroke and the other win came from the 200 free relay team of Brownstead, Mikey Challis, Matt Morris and Witt.

Girls’ swimming

Upper St. Clair tops State College

UPPER ST. CLAIR State College won only two events in a 121-59 loss to Upper St. Clair.

Grace Dangelo took first place in the 100-yard butterfly and Abbey Whipple had the top time in the 100 freestyle to lead the Lady Little Lions.

Gymnastics

Bellefonte falls

ST MARYS Samantha Hackenberg paced the Lady Red Raiders with second place in the all-around (32.550), but it wasn’t enough in her team’s loss to St. Marys, 128.575-126.400.

Sarah Conner had a runner-up finish on the bars (8.275) and a third-place finish on the vault (8.600), while Hackenberg was third on the bars (7.825), beam (7.85) and floor (8.45).
