Campus Corner: Penns Valley grad Corey Hazel excelling for Lock Haven wrestling
Penns Valley graduate Corey Hazel split his dual meet wrestling matches last week for Lock Haven.
Hazel, who is wrestling at 184 pounds, dropped a 5-2 decision to Cornell’s 10th ranked Max Dean as the Bald Eagles lost a 20-18 battle on Sunday. The loss followed a 4-2 win over Cleveland State’s Nick Corba thanks to a last-second takedown. Lock Haven won the meet 31-6. Hazel is now 20-7 for the season while the Bald Eagles are 11-4.
Wrestling
Jake Taylor (Bald Eagle Area, Cornell) is 6-1 at 184 for the season.
Trevor Corl (Bellefonte, Lycoming) owns a 27-2 record at 149. Lycoming is 10-5.
Basketball
Kourtney Beamesderfer (Penns Valley, Penn State Behrend) is averaging 6.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. She also has 32 assists and 25 steals for the 8-13 Lions.
Cass Book (Bellefonte, Grove City) has a 1.3 scoring average with 11 rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Jess Book (Bellefonte, Grove City) averages 3.9 points per game. She has 79 rebounds, 16 assists, 11 steals and a block. Grove City is 13-8.
Zach Engle (Penns Valley, Juniata) averages 0.7 points and 0.7 rebounds for the 18-3 Eagles.
Kyla Irwin (State College, UConn) plays an average of 9.2 minutes for the top-ranked Huskies. She averages 1.2 rebounds and 2.7 points per game to go with 13 assists, a block and five steals. UConn is 22-0.
Taylor Love (State College, Marymount) has a 2.8 scoring average and also averages 2.4 rebounds per game. Marymount is 18-3.
Bryan Sekunda (State College, Stony Brook) is scoring at a 6.7 clip. He also averages 2.4 rebounds per game and has 40 assists, four steals and five blocks. Stony Brook is 8-16.
Tommy Sekunda (State College, Seton Hill) is averaging 5.7 points per game. He has 45 rebounds, 17 assists and five steals. Seton Hill is 8-14.

Indoor track
Emma Federinko (Penns Valley, Misericordia) was third in the 5,000 in 18:59.69 at the Susquehanna Challenge.
Kylie Orndorf (Penns Valley, Juniata) threw the 35-pound weight 11.64 meters to place 18th and put the shot 10.07 meters to place 20th at the Susquehanna Challenge.
Lacrosse
Noah Schwab (State College, Air Force) made nine saves and allowed 17 goals in his team’s season-opening 18-4 loss to No. 2 Duke.
Swimming
Ben Gingher (State College, Eastern Michigan) swam to a time of 22.05 seconds in the 50 freestyle against Albion College but did not place.
David Rovansek (State College, Washington College) finished fifth in both the 1,000 freestyle (10:29.31) and 100 freestyle (51.01) against Ursinus.
Ian Schrock (State College, Gettysburg) was sixth in the 100 backstroke in 56.54 and fifth in the 200 backstroke in 2:02.20. He also swam on the fourth-place freestyle relay team that posted a time of 1:29.09. Gettysburg lost to Swarthmore, 133-129.
