HS roundup: Penns Valley girls’ basketball’s Hannah Montminy hits 1,000 points milestone

Penns Valley girls’ basketball’s Hannah Montminy achieved an impressive career milestone when she hit 1,000 points on Dec. 23 with a 3-pointer in the third quarter against Bald Eagle Area.

The senior entered the game 12 points shy of 1,000, and scored 14 against the Bald Eagles to put her career points total at 1,002. Of Montminy’s 14 points, 12 were scored by way of 3-pointers.

Behind Montminy, the second-highest scorer for the Rams was Leah Beben, who netted eight points.

Lacee Barnhart led the scoring for the Bald Eagles with 13 points, followed by Abby Hoover with 6.

BEA wins West Branch Tournament

The Bald Eagles overcame a couple of slow starts on Friday and Saturday to win the West Branch Tournament for the first time since 2012.

BEA used a big second quarter, outscoring West Branch 19-5, to beat the Warriors 48-36 on Friday and set up the championship game with Philipsburg-Osceola on Saturday.

After leading by two points at the end of the first, the Bald Eagles used another big second quarter, this time outscoring the their opponent 10-4, to beat the Mounties 32-16 and improve to 4-2 on the season.

“We played great defense tonight holding them under 20 points,” BEA coach Darin Hazel said in an email. “I am really proud of the girls winning four games before the new year.”

Lacee Barnhart led the scoring against West Branch with 22, while Abby Hoover was the top scorer against P-O with 8.

The Mounties defeated Harmony 45-36 to get to the championship game. Kyleigh Kennedy had her second double double of the season, with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Lindsey Bordas led P-O in scoring against BEA, while Kennedy had eight rebounds and forced 10 turnovers.

Bellefonte takes 3rd in he Selinsgrove Holiday Tournament

After a tough 41-35 loss to host team Selinsgrove, in which the Red Raiders outscored their opponent in two of the four quarters, Bellefonte rebounded with a 40-36 win over Mifflinburg in the consolation final for third in the Selinsgrove Holiday Tournament.

“Our hard work finally paid off as we were able to consistently get open looks and score the basketball.,” coach Marcus Toomer said in an email. “Getting off to an 11-0 start in the game really built our confidence and we sustained it all the way to end when Mifflinburg made their late run.”

Maddie Tice was Bellefonte’s top scorer in both games, netting 11 points against Selinsgrove and 17 against Mifflinburg. She was selected to the all-tournament team for the Red Raiders.

Bellefonte is now 3-6 on the season.

State College wins Kiwanis Holiday Classic in OT thriller

The host team put on a show in State College’s annual Kiwanis Holiday Classic as the Lady Little Lions earned a double-overtime 83-76 victory over North Schuylkill to win the tournament.

With about 17 seconds remaining in regulation, Maya Bokunewicz hit a jump shot to give State College the 54-53 lead. An offensive rebound by Rylie Gregg resulted in two successful free throws by Bokunewicz to extend the lead to 56-53 with 14.8 remaining. North Schuykill was able to tie things up at 58-58 with a big 3-pointer to send the game into OT.

The two teams battled evenly through the first four minutes of OT, until clutch shots from Jada Coleman and Caitlyn Brannon helped the Lady Little Lions pull away in the second for the win.

Bokunewicz and Izzy Leazier were both all-tournament team selections for State College.

St. Joe’s splits games at the Claysburg-Kimmel Tournament

St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy went 1-1 this weekend at the Claysburg-Kimmel Tournament.

The WolfPack lost its first game 50-32 to Bedford, then bounced back with a 37-26 win over Chestnut Ridge.

Penns Valley wins Ram Winter Jam

After trailing for nearly three quarters, Penns Valley came back to beat Mifflinburg 51-44 to win their first Ram Winter Jam since 2015.

Zach Braucht led the scoring with 22 points, followed by Logan Snyder with 17, according to stats kept by hometownsportsscene.com.

To get to the championship game, Penns Valley first had to hold on to beat Bellefonte 41-38. Braught again led the Rams in scoring in that game with 22. Ben McCartney was Bellefonte’s highest scorer with 10.

Bellefonte went on to win its consolation final game 68-32 over Juniata. McCartney again led the scoring with 26, while Isaiah Nadolsky was also in double digits with 14.

BEA places 3rd at the Punxsutawney Holiday Tournament

Bald Eagle Area boys’ basketball topped Marion Center 52-41 in the consolation final of the the Punxsutawney Holiday Tournament on Saturday for the program’s second win of the season.

Jaden Jones led the team in scoring with 13, followed by Nick Maynard’s 11.

The Eagles lost 52-49 to Clarion in the first round. Jones again led the scoring with 16, while Maynard and Luke Wilson also hit double digits, with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

State College beats Berwick in Kiwanis Holiday Classic

State College earned at 69-53 win over Berwick in the Kiwanis Holiday Classic over the weekend.

The little Lions were led in scoring by Johnny Friberg and Nathan Lusk, who had 17 points apiece. Trey Oyler added 12.

P-O beats Curwensville

Philipsburg-Osceola improved to 4-3 on the season with a 76-34 win over Curwensville on Friday.

Ryan Whitehead led the scoring with 23 points, while Parker Matson had 13 and Kyle Hahn had 12.

St. Joe’s competes at Trinity Holiday Showcase

St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy went 0-2 this past weekend at the Trinity Holiday Showcase, falling 68-30 to Berks Catholic and 94-44 to Trinity.

Trio of Little Lions win Gov. Mifflin Holiday Tournament

State College cleaned up at the Governor Mifflin Holiday wrestling tournament over the weekend, crowning three individual champs plus eight additional placewinners to finish second out of 23 teams.

Freshman Hayden Cunningham pinned his way to the 106-pound title, scoring 32 team points, while Owen Woolcott strung together three pins and a decision for 30 team points and the 132-pound title, and Lance Urbas earned the 170-pound crown by way of two decisions, a major and a pin for 27 team points.

Also placing for the Little Lions were Eric Weaver, third place at 120 pounds; Clayton Leidy, third at 138; Harrison Schoen, third at 285; Noah Prewitt, fourth at 160; Carter Weaverling, fifth at 126; Kyle Martin, seventh at 145; Tyler Price, seventh at 182 and Josiah Lose, seventh at 195.

BEA’s McClenahan wins MyHOUSE Trojan Wars

Bald Eagle Area senior and Cornell wrestling commit Gage McClenahan was crowned champion at 145 pounds at the 2019 MyHOUSE Trojan Wars in Chambersburg over the weekend.

Joining McClenahan on the podium were teammates Coen Bainey, who placed third at 106 pounds, Cooper Gilham, fourth at 120, and David Close, who was fifth at 220. As a team, the Eagles placed sixth out of 30.

En route to the title, McClenahan earned pins of 19 and 45 seconds, along with two regular decisions and another decision won in the first tiebreaker period.

Bellefonte’s Rossman wins Conestoga Valley Holiday Classic

Bellefonte junior Ethan Rossman was crowned the 182-pound champ at the Conestoga Valley Holiday Classic over the weekend, helping to lead the Red Raiders to third-place finish out of 26 teams.

Rossman earned three pins and a major decision for 31 team points en route to the title.

Also placing for Bellefonte were Ethan Richner, second place at 160 pounds; Aidan O`Shea, third at 106; Jude Swisher, third at 126; Alex Coppolo, third at 132; Lane Aikey, sixth at 120; Tyler Benner, seventh at 195; Stephen Ivicic, eighth at 170 and Max Barrier, eighth at 220.

P-O takes 9th at Conestoga Valley Holiday Classic

Philipsburg-Osceola placed six of its 10 wrestlers over the weekend at the Conestoga Valley Holiday Classic to take ninth out of 26 teams.

The Mounties were led by Gabe Dunkelberger, Hunter Weitoish and Parker Moore, who each placed fourth at 132, 160 and 195 pounds, respectively.

Also placing for P-O were Chase Chapman, fifth place at 138 pounds, Tyler Anderson, sixth at 285 and Nick Coudriet, seventh at 131.

St. Joe’s Stoltzfus crowned Powerade champ

St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Tyler Stoltzfus was crowned the 170-pound champion over the weekend at the 2019 Powerade Tournament. He earned three decisions, a major and a pin en route to the crown.

In total, the Wolfpack had three placewinners with Caleb Dowling taking fourth at 152 pounds and Amonn Ohl taking eighth at 132 pounds. As a team, St. Joe’s finished 22nd out of 53.
