HS roundup: Penns Valley wrestling’s Clayton Royer seals his 100th win with a pin

Penns Valley wrestling’s Clayton Royer checked off a career milestone Thursday when he recorded his 100th win with a pin over Bald Eagle Area’s Kevin Taylor.

But for Royer, who sealed up the win with a cross-face cradle, that milestone is just the beginning of what he aims to accomplish this season.

“I came into the year knowing I’m getting those 13 wins to get my 100th; that’s one milestone,” he told the Centre Daily Times. “We have banners in the wrestling room, I’ve got my name on one of them. Now, I want to get my name on the other one ... state placewinner.”

While Royer won the 138-pound bout, BEA took the dual, 46-27.

BEA’s Gage McClenahan took the featured dual of the evening in a battle between former PIAA placewinners at 152, in a 6-4 sudden victory win over Malachi DuVall.

PV’s DuVall wins Tool City Tournament

Penns Valley’s Malachi DuVall was crowned the 152-pound champ Saturday at the Tool City Tournament in Meadville.

He recorded two pins and a technical fall en route to the finals, where he won by disqualification due to a technical violation by his opponent.

Also placing for the Rams was Justin Darlington, third at 113 pounds; Clayton Royer, fourth at 138 pounds; Caelob Packer, fourth at 195 pounds; Chase Fleshman, seventh at 106 pounds and Dristen Wolfe, seventh at 170 pounds.

The Rams scored 113 points to tie for sixth out of 24 teams.

State College goes undefeated at BEA duals

State College had an undefeated weekend, going 4-0 in Wingate at the BEA Duals on Saturday.

The Little Lions defeated Bald Eagle Area 46-21, Fauquier, Virginia, 47-27, Jersey Shore 56-12 and Bellefonte 41-29.

State College was BEA’s lone loss on the weekend. The Eagles went 4-1 with a 43-30 win over Altoona, 40-33 over Fauquier, 61-12 over Holidaysburg ad 49-22 over Jersey Shore 49-22.

Bellefonte’s lone loss on the weekend also came to State College. The Red Raiders defeated Jersey Shore 57-24, Altoona 50-22, Holidaysburg 62-15 and Fauquier 42-37.

P-O goes 3-2 at Mountie Classic

Philipsburg-Osceola had a busy weekend of wrestling as it hosted the annual Mountaineer Classic Tournament.

The Mounties went 3-2 at the tournament, recording a 36-31 win over Berlin Brothersvalley, a 46-30 win over North Star and 51-27 win over Danville. Their losses came to Brookville, 50-24, and Johnsonburg 34-33.

St. Joe’s has 2 nationally ranked wrestlers

St. Joe’s wrestling, which went 1-4 at the Line Mountain Duals over the weekend, has two nationally ranked wrestlers on its team.

Senior Tyler Stoltzfus is ranked No. 2 in the country by InterMat at 170 pounds. He was also named The Open Mat’s High School Wrestler of the Week. Teammate Caleb Dowling is ranked No. 13 at 152 pounds.

BEA’s Gage McClenahan is No. 5 at 145 pounds.

State College records wins over Altoona, Hollidaysburg

State College girls’ basketball had a successful weekend with a 54-44 roadwin over Altoona on Friday and a 43-31 home win over Hollidayburg on Saturday.

Against Altoona, State College had four players in double digits, according to stats kept by the Altoona Mirror. Jada Coleman led the Lady Little Lions in scoring with 17 points, including a 3-pointer. Maya Bokunewicz had 14 and a 3-pointer, Rylie Gregg 11 and Isabelle Leazier 10, with two 3-pointers.

Bokunewicz led the scoring against Hollidaysburg with 26 points.

The Lady Little Lions improve to 4-2.

Bellefonte outpaced by Williamsport

Despite a surge in the fourth quarter, Bellefonte girls’ basketball couldn’t keep pace with Williamsport and fell 59-41 on Thursday.

Maddie Tice was the high scorer for the Red Raiders with 13.

“Williamsport is a very tough and gritty defensive team,” head coach Marcus Toomer said in an email. “They were able to pressure us into a lot of turnovers, especially in the second and third quarters. They really controlled the tempo, and we could not stop their momentum.

Bellefonte is now 3-7 on the season.

BEA falls to Central Mountain

Central Mountain outscored Bald Eagle Area in the first three quarters Thursday to hold on to a 40-33 win over the Eagles.

BEA had two players in double digits, in Lacee Barnhart with 15 and Abby Hoover, who had 13, including a big 3-pointer.

The Eagles are now 4-3.

St. Joe’s falls to Northumberland Christian

St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 45-31 Friday to Northumberland Christian School on Friday.

The Wolves played Penns Manor on Saturday, but the results were not available by press time.

Penns Valley loses makeup game

Penns Valley fell 60-43 Saturday to Loyalsock Township in a game that had been previously postponed due to weather.

Hannah Montminy and Katie Romig led the Rams in scoring with 12 apiece.

Penns Valley falls to 2-4.

Boys’ basketball

P-O tops Moshannon Valley

Philipsburg-Oseola earned a convincing 48-26 win over Moshannon Valley on Friday.

The Mounties outscored the Black Knights in all four quarters.

Reaching double digits for P-O were Jacob DeSimone with 13 and Kaleb Richardson with 12.

BEA loses battle to Selinsgrove

Despite a comeback effort, Bald Eagle Area fell 57-44 to Selinsgrove on Friday.

The Eagles had three players in double digits, according to stats kept by hometownsportsscene.com. Jaden Jones led the team with 12, followed by Nick Maynard and Cole Parsons, each with 11.

Penns Valley outpowered by Bloomsburg

Penns Valley fell 48-34 to Bloomsburg on Friday.

The Rams are now 5-3 on the season.

Trey Oyler was the lone Little Lion to reach double digits Friday with 12 points, and Johnny Friberg did it on Saturday with 22.

The Little Lions fell to 4-6.

State College’s Brownstead, Heasley win at Bucknell

State College swimmers Matt Brownstead and Foster Heasley both swam to first-place finishes Saturday at the New Years Challenge invitational at Bucknell University.

Brownstead, who’s committed to the University of Virginia, finished first in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races, with times of 20.14 and 46.24 seconds, respectively. The senior is the reigning PIAA champ in both events.

Heasley’s first-place finish came in the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.9 seconds. Heasley also placed sixth in the 200-yard IM in 2:00.91.

According to statistics kept by PaSwimming.com, Brownstead’s finish in the 50 free is the fastest recorded in the state so far this season.

Also with top-10 finishes were Garrick Zheng, who placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 55.03, John Brownstead, who placed eighth in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.30 and Will Ulmer, who placed 10th in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.02.

The relay team of Zachary Lambert, Heasley, Zheng and Matt Brownstead finished fourth in the 200-yard medley, Matt Brownstead, Heasley, Ulmer and William Straley placed sixth in the 200-yard freestyle, and John Brownstead, Zheng, Straley and Lambert placed seventh in the 400-yard freestyle.

On the girls’ side, freshman Jade Castro placed third in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.49 seconds and third in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.84 seconds; Madelyn Koehle placed fourth in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:14.23 and seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.79; Abbey Whipple placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.81, and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.51; Colleen Adams was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.78 and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle in 5:17.46.

The relay team of Adams, Koehle, Castro and Whipple placed sixth in both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle.

Diver Andy Ladrido placed fifth with 384.40 and Marcus Wheeler was eighth with 349.80

Overall, the boys’ team placed fifth out of eight with 257.5 points. The girls’ finished seventh with 209.
