Philipsburg-Osceola football coach Brian McGonigal announces resignation

Philipsburg-Osceola will be in search of a new high school football coach for 2020. Brian McGonigal announced his resignation Friday night with a statement addressing the “P-O football family” from his personal Twitter account.

McGonigal cited family medical reasons as the cause of his resignation.

“My family has received some medical news that will require me to be around to be a supportive husband and father,” the statement read.

The former coach led the Mounties for the past two seasons, as interim head coach in 2018. P-O finished both seasons with a 1-9 record to go 2-18 overall. The school decided to forfeit the team’s final two games this season after injuries derailed the roster and left it devoid of experienced players.

McGonigal was previously an assistant with the Mounties, and a middle school football coach at State College.

He thanked the P-O community for his time at the helm of the program.

“I’m so thankful for the opportunity that I’ve had to coach all of you and to meet such wonderful people,” the statement read. “You all welcomed me and have made me a Mountie for life. I am so proud of the work we have all done together to make the program better than it was when I arrived ... I wish you the best of luck moving forward.”

Philipsburg-Osceola did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
