HS roundup: Bellefonte wrestling reaches American semis at Virginia Duals
Bellefonte wrestling made quick work of Penns Valley on Tuesday before heading to this past weekend’s prestigious Virginia Duals, where they made waves but ultimately came up short.
Bellefonte started off the week with a 60-17 win over the Rams, with pins by half the team: Aidan O’Shea (106 pounds), Nathan Smith (120), Jude Swisher (126), Alex Coppolo (132), Micah Fetterolf (145), Ethan Richner (160), Tyler Benner (195) and Max Barrier (285).
The Raiders began with that same dominance in the Virginia Duals. They cruised past First Colonial 52-22 and beat Chantilly 40-29, before coming up short in two matches that came down to the final bout.
In the semifinals of the American bracket, Bellefonte fell 31-30 to St. Mary’s Ryken after the Raiders’ heavyweight lost the final bout by way of fall. In the consolation bracket, Bellefonte lost 37-35 to Butler in identical fashion — by falling in the final bout by way of fall.
Four Bellefonte wrestlers finished a perfect 4-0 during the tournament, including O’Shea (106), Richner (160), Benner (182) and Ethan Rossman (195).
SJCA group shines at Juniata Duals
St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy may not have come away with a team title over the weekend — it traveled just six wrestlers — but five returned home from the Juniata Duals with an unblemished record there.
Among the wrestlers to finish 3-0 were Amonn Ohl (132 pounds), Zack Witmer (138), Caleb Dowling (152), Keegan Rothrock (160) and Tyler Stoltzfus (170/182).
Ohl won by two falls and a forfeit, as did Witmer, Rothrock and Stoltzfus. Dowling won by one fall and two forfeits.
Stoltzfus earned a pair of wins at 170 pounds but also came away with a pin at 182 pounds.
Success mixed for P-O
Philipsburg-Osceola lost one dual and then went 1-1 at the Husky Duals this past week.
The Mounties lost 45-26 to Bald Eagle Area on Thursday, before splitting their bouts during the Husky Duals at Mifflin County on Saturday. At the tournament, P-O started off with a 60-15 loss to Mifflin County before beating Conestoga Valley 48-30 to clinch third place.
Nick Coudriet (113 pounds), Austin Foster (145) and Hunter Weitoish (160) went 2-0 at the Husky Duals. Foster finished with a pair of falls, Coudriet won by injury default and fall, and Weitoish boasted a decision and technical fall.
Among the other P-O wrestlers with pins against Conestoga Valley were Scott Frantz (120), Alexandro Dunkelberger (160), Parker Moore (195) and Tyler Anderson (285).
BEA upends P-O
The Eagles wrestled just once this past week — but they made it count.
BEA cruised past Philipsburg-Osceola 45-26 Thursday after starting off hot to prevent any kind of late comeback. Among those with falls for Bald Eagle Area were Cooper Gilham (120 pounds), Gage McClenahan (145), Noah Foltz (182) and David Close (285).
Foltz started the match off with a fall, P-O followed that up with a win by forfeit, and then the Eagles rattled off a 30-0 run thanks to two forfeits, two falls and two decisions.
Philipsburg-Osceola trailed 30-6 at that point but didn’t give up and outscored BEA 20-15 the rest of the way before ultimately falling in the end. Gabriel Dunkelberger (132) and Chase Chapman (138) both paced P-O with pins.
Penns Valley falls in only match
The Rams couldn’t overcome a tough Bellefonte team Tuesday in a 60-17 loss.
Micah Fetterolf (145 pounds) and Malachi DuVall (152) both paced the Rams with pins, while Clayton Royer (138) added a technical fall.
Penns Valley will next take on Clearfield on Tuesday and Mifflinburg Area on Thursday.
Little Lions lose to CD
State College couldn’t hold on to an early lead Thursday in a 42-24 loss to Central Dauphin.
The Little Lions held a narrow 13-11 lead after the first five bouts, before getting outscored 31-11 the rest of the way.
Hayden Cunningham (106 pounds) and Harrison Schoen (285) started and ended the match with State College’s only falls. Other Little Lions to win included Lance Urbas (170) by tech fall, Owen Woolcott (132) by major decision and Anthony Herzing (120) by decision.
State College is slated to take on Central Mountain on Tuesday and Cumberland Valley on Thursday.
Girls’ basketball
State College’s win streak continues
The Lady Little Lions won another two games this past week, boosting their win streak to 10 total games.
State College cruised past Cumberland Valley 49-37 Wednesday and then made quick work of Carlisle on Friday, 65-39. No other information was provided.
The Lady Little Lions haven’t lost since Dec. 7. Their next game will be played at Central Dauphin on Monday.
Lady Rams win 2 of 3
Hannah Montminy paced Penns Valley in scoring in every game this past week, as the Lady Rams beat Clearfield and Midd-West but fell to Huntingdon.
Penns Valley opened with a 44-34 win over Midd-West on Monday and continued that momentum Wednesday to a 55-20 victory over Clearfield. It then stumbled, however, with a 59-53 loss to Huntingdon on Friday.
Montminy led her team in scoring with 18, 17 and 20 points, respectively. Leah Beben scored 15 against Huntingdon, while Katie Martell had 11 against Clearfield and nine vs. Midd-West.
Penns Valley is now 4-6 overall with a 3-3 league record. It’ll next take on Philipsburg-Osceola, varsity only, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Bellefonte ends week on high note
The Lady Red Raiders went 1-2 this past week, falling to Huntindon and Hollidaysburg before beating Bald Eagle Area.
Maddie Tice paced Bellefonte with a team-high seven points Friday in the 34-25 win over rival BEA in what coach Marcus Toomer termed “one of the toughest games” that his team has faced this season.
“It was a tough, defensive battle, but the team did a great job of ratcheting up the intensity on defense in the second half,” he said, especially praising the effort of Bella Corman.
Bellefonte outscored BEA 19-14 in the second half.
On Wednesday, Bellefonte fell to Huntingdon 50-35 despite Sara DeHaas’ team-high 10 points. And, on Monday, Bellefonte ran into a buzzsaw in Hollidaysburg and lost 68-34 — in spite of DeHaas’ 12 points and Tice’s 11.
Bellefonte is 4-9 this season and will next take on Clearfield on Wednesday.
Short-handed BEA drops 2
Bald Eagle Area, which dressed just six players Monday, went 0-2 this past week with losses to East Juniata and Bellefonte.
BEA fell 36-30 to East Juniata on Monday, while Maddie Perry scored 13 points and Kierra Serb added nine. “I thought the kids fought tonight playing with only 6 players,” coach Darin Hazel said in a statement. “I was pleased to see Maddie Perry be more aggressive on the offensive end.”
Against Bellefonte on Friday, BEA fell 34-25 despite Abigail Hoover’s game-high eight points.
The Lady Eagles’ record now stands at 4-5. They’re scheduled to take on Huntingdon on the road Tuesday.
P-O loses 2 tough games
Philipsburg-Osceola lost in lopsided fashion this past week to Tyrone and Central.
On Wednesday, the Lady Mounties lost to Central 51-20, with Sam Bainey and Regan Thorp leading the way with six points apiece. On Friday, P-O fell 79-19 to Tyrone.
In that loss, Kyleigh Kennedy had nine points and her first career 3-pointer.
P-O will next take on St. Joseph’s at home Monday.
SJCA thumps Clearfield
St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy beat Clearfield 52-31 on the road Monday in its only scheduled game of the week.
No individual results were provided.
SJCA will next take on Philipsburg-Osceola on the road Monday.
Boys’ basketball
Rams drop 2 of 3
Penns Valley notched a win over rival Bald Eagle Area this past week but fell to both Clearfield and Huntingdon.
On Monday, the Rams edged out the Eagles 42-38 — thanks in large part to Logan Snyder’s double-double, with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Zach Braucht chipped in another 12 points.
On Tuesday, Penns Valley fell to Clearfield 50-38, despite Snyder’s team-high 17 points. And, on Friday, the Rams lost 65-48 to Huntingdon.
Penns Valley will next host Mifflinburg on Monday.
P-O drops 2 to even its record
Philipsburg-Osceola dropped two games this past week to fall to 5-5 on the season.
The Mounties started off Wednesday with a 73-64 loss to Tyrone before stumbling again Friday in a 69-44 loss to Central.
Against Central, P-O was outscored 19-2 in the third quarter. Ryan Whitehead led P-O with a team-high 18 points.
Against Tyrone, Whitehead added 16 points while Jacob DeSimone chipped in 12.
P-O will next take on St. Joseph’s on Monday.
BEA splits pair of games
Bald Eagle Area couldn’t pull a win off against Penns Valley, but it ended the week on a high note with a win over Bellefonte.
The Eagles fell to Penns Valley 42-38 Monday in spite of Nick Maynard’s impressive 17-point, 17-rebound performance. But they bounced back Friday with a 53-43 win over Bellefonte.
In that victory, Jaden Jones paced BEA with more than 20 points while Maynard added another double-double.
BEA is now 3-7 on the season. It will next take on Mount Union on the road Monday.
Bellefonte goes 1-1 on week
The Red Raiders started the week off with an overtime win against Brookville but couldn’t keep the momentum going in a loss to Bald Eagle Area.
Bellefonte beat Brookville 52-48 (OT) on Monday, as three players surpassed double-digits: Ben McCartney (15), Logan Bernier (13) and Isaiah Nadolsky (11). On Friday, the Raiders lost 53-43 to BEA.
In that loss, Nadolsky and McCartney both netted 14 points apiece.
Bellefonte will next take on St. Marys on the road Monday.
State College loses 2 of 3
The Little Lions ended up on the losing end of it this past week, with a victory over Williamsport but losses to Cumberland Valley and Carlisle.
State College started the week off right Monday with a 60-58 win over Williamsport, but the winning wouldn’t last. On Wednesday, it fell 43-42 to Cumberland Valley and, on Friday, lost 66-59 to Carlisle.
State College is 4-9 on the season. It will next take on Central Dauphin on the road Monday.
SJCA searching for first win
St. Joseph’s dropped two more games this past week as its young roster is still looking for its first victory on the season.
SJCA lost 73-41 to Bishop Carroll on Monday before coming up just short Friday, losing 54-53 to Saltsburg in a home game. No individual results were provided.
The Wolfpack will next host Philipsburg-Osceola on Monday.
Hockey
Little Lions go 2-0 on week
State College thumped one opponent and held on to win a nail-biter against another this past week.
The Little Lions shut out Forest Hills 10-0 Tuesday on the road. On Thursday, they scored three unanswered goals in the third period to force overtime against Central Cambria — where they eventually won 5-4.
Against Central Cambria, State College was out-shot by a 44-21 margin in regulation. Little Lions goalie John Olsen made 40 saves.
Robert Zimmerman finished with four of State College’s five goals, including two in the the third period and the game-winner in overtime. (Joseph Franklin had the other goal.)
Against Forest Hills, Zimmerman and Adler Gabel had two goals apiece. Others to score included Benjamin Williams, David Lee, Wesley Olsen, Thomas Hay, Rees Engel and Alex McGuire.
Alex Walaschek recorded the shutout between the pipes with 11 saves.
