State College wrestling off to good start in 2nd day of PIAA Class 3A dual championships

For the first time in 17 years, State College has its first dual victory at the Giant Center in Hershey.

The Little Lions topped Garnet Valley 38-18 in the first round of consolations of the PIAA Class 3A dual championships on Friday morning.

State College won 8 of the 14 bouts and amassed five bonus-point victories in those wins.

The Little Lions dropped the opening contest at 145 pounds with Kyle Martin falling 9-5. However, Harrison Hoopes, like he did Thursday night, got things rolling.

Hoopes built up an 8-0 lead on Matt Flicker at 152 pounds. Hoopes then pinned Flicker in 2:01 to give State College a 6-3 lead.

Garnet Valley responded with a 2-0 win at 160 pounds to tie the dual at 6-6, but things went downhill fast for the Jaguars.

Braden Newby was inserted in the lineup at 170 pounds for the Little Lions. He picked up a 3-0 win over Jared Park to give State College a 9-6 lead.

Lance Urbas bumped up to 182 pounds and made short work of David Dorf. Urbas pinned Dorf in 28 seconds. Ty Price rattled off three takedowns in a 7-2 win at 195 pounds to push the Little Lions out to an 18-6 lead.

A Garnet Valley win at 220 gave the Jaguars hope, but State College quickly shut the door. Harrison Schoen, who didn’t get to wrestle on Thursday, earned a 3-0 win over Nick Mahoney at 285 pounds with all three points scored in the second period.

Hayden Cunningham, who also didn’t get a chance to wrestle on Thursday, had a match that one could’ve missed in a blink. The freshman put on a three-quarter nelson on Francis Reagan to earn a fall in 14 seconds. The Little Lions lead ballooned to 27-9.

Garnet Valley looked to make a comeback with three straight wins from 113 to 126 pounds. The Jaguars got to within 27-18, but that was it.

Junior Owen Woolcott and senior Clayton Leidy closed the dual out with bonus-point victories. Woolcott racked up a 15-0 technical fall in 4:55. Leidy led 14-0 before pinning his opponent in 3:14.

State College will now take on Cathedral Prep, which is the District 10 champion. The dual will take place at 6 p.m. and can be seen online at FloWrestling.com.
