HS roundup: Penns Valley’s Logan Snyder reaches 1,000-point milestone in boys’ basketball
Here’s what happened in Centre County high school sports from Feb. 9-15:
Boys’ basketball
Rams’ Logan Snyder reaches 1,000-point milestone
Penns Valley’s Logan Snyder made history in the final game of the regular season Wednesday night when he scored the 1,000th point of his career during a win over Philipsburg-Osceola.
Snyder scored 24 points in the 71-57 win, while teammate Zach Braucht added a game-high 30 points.
Earlier in the week, on Monday, the Rams fell to Huntingdon 56-35.
Penns Valley now stands at 14-8 on the season and earned the No. 5 seed in the Class 3A district tournament. It will next take on No. 4-seed West Shamokin on Friday in the second round of districts.
BEA ends season with loss
Bald Eagle Area couldn’t overcome a tough Tyrone team on Wednesday in a 75-47 loss.
Jaden Jones paced the Eagles with 15 points, and Nick Maynard added 12. But it wasn’t nearly enough against the Mountain League co-champs.
BEA ended its season with a 5-17 record. It did not qualify for districts.
Bellefonte splits week’s games
The Red Raiders went 1-1 this past week, with a win over Jersey Shore but a loss to Huntingdon.
On Monday, Bellefonte grabbed a 64-51 victory over Jersey Shore. And, on Wednesday, it fell 70-41 to Huntingdon.
No other game details were reported.
With the split, the Red Raiders finished the season at 8-14. They did not qualify for districts.
P-O drops finale, still advances to districts
Philipsburg-Osceola may have lost to Penns Valley 71-51 on Wednesday, but its season isn’t over yet.
The Mounties (10-12) reached the Class 3A district tournament as the No. 9 seed and will take on No. 8 Cambria Heights at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
P-O ended its regular season with a loss despite three players reaching double digits. Ryan Whitehead finished with a team-high 23 points, Tyler Doyle netted 17, and Jeremy Whitehead chipped in 10.
Little Lions move on to districts
State College didn’t play any games this past week, but it did learn it’ll have the No. 2 seed in the Class 6A district tournament.
The Little Lions (6-16) will take on top-seed Altoona at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mount Aloysius in the district championship game.
Girls’ basketball
Bellefonte goes 1-1 on week
The Lady Red Raiders split this past week’s games, with a win over Clearfield and a loss against DuBois.
Bellefonte opened the week Tuesday with a 61-54 loss to DuBois, despite three players reaching double digits — Maddie Tice (14), Sara DeHaas (11) and Mia Johnson (10). But it rebounded the very next night, with a 54-38 win over Clearfield.
In that victory, Mallorie Smith led the way with 21 points while Tice added 19 points.
“The team did a great job bouncing back from the tough loss the night before,” coach Marcus Toomer said. “After a slow start, our defense really picked up and we were able to score the basketball on a consistent basis.”
Bellefonte (10-12) earned the No. 5 seed in Class 5A districts and will have a rematch when it takes on No. 4-seed DuBois at 6 p.m. Monday in the first round.
Lady Rams split games, advance to districts
Penns Valley beat Philipsburg-Osceola and lost to Huntingdon this past week, as it still qualified for districts.
The Lady Rams upended P-O 63-31 on Tuesday and lost to Huntingdon, 57-41, on Monday. Hannah Montminy was the team’s leading scorer both nights with 22 and 12 points, respectively. Avery Dinges also added 11 points Tuesday.
Penns Valley (10-12) will serve as the No. 8 seed in the Class 3A district tournament, where it will host No. 9-seed Mount Union at 7 p.m. Monday.
BEA drops season finale
Bald Eagle Area faced a tough Tyrone team Wednesday, falling 70-20 to wrap up its season.
Tyrone started the game off on a 27-5 run.
Maddie Perry led BEA in scoring with seven points, while Lacee Barnhart and Taylor Kilmer chipped in six points apiece.
BEA (7-15) did not qualify for districts.
P-O ends season with loss
Philipsburg-Osceola couldn’t overcome a slow start Tuesday in the 63-31 loss to Penns Valley.
The Lady Mounties trailed 20-2 after the first quarter.
Sam Bainey and Lindsey Bordas scored 10 points apiece in the loss.
Philipsburg-Osceola (4-18) did not qualify for districts.
State College earns top district seed
The Lady Little Lions didn’t play any games this past week, but they will serve as the No. 1 seed in the Class 6A district tournament.
State College (17-5) will take on No. 2-seed Altoona in the district championship game at 6 p.m. Friday at Mount Aloysius.
SJCA advances to districts
St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy didn’t have any games scheduled this past week, but they’re still moving on to the district tournament in Class A.
The Lady Wolfpack (11-9) are the No. 4 seeds and will take on No. 5-seed Saltsburg at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the first round.
Wrestling
4 SJCA wrestlers grab district gold
St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy finished Saturday’s District 6 Class 2A wrestling championships with four wrestlers having gold medals hung around their necks.
The winners included Zack Witmer (138), Caleb Dowling (152), Keegan Rothrock (160) and Tyler Stoltzfus (170). Amonn Ohl also finished as the runner-up at 132 pounds, securing his spot at regionals.
Rothrock beat P-O’s Hunter Weitoish after rallying and winning in sudden victory. Dowling won an 8-3 decision over former teammate Malachi DuVall of Penns Valley. Stoltzfus beat Richland’s John Sabol with a fall, and Witmer beat Penns Valley’s Clayton Royer 4-1.
“The guys did well,” coach Pat Flynn told the Centre Daily Times. “The semifinals they were a little flat in the beginning, but they turned it up a notch,” Flynn said.
BEA’s Bainey wins district title
Bald Eagle Area’s Coen Bainey won the Class 2A district title at 106 pounds Saturday, while six total BEA wrestlers moved on to regionals.
Among the others who moved on, by finishing sixth or better, were Cooper Gilham (2nd, 120 pounds), Gage McClenahan (2nd, 145), David Close (3rd, 220), Drew Koleno (6th, 152) and Noah Foltz (6th, 160).
Bainey won his district title in style, by pinning Central’s Jaxon Matthews in just 19 seconds.
The Eagles finished second in the district team race with 164.5 points, 10 points behind champion Glendale.
P-O sends 6 to regionals
Six Philipsburg-Osceola wrestlers are moving on to the PIAA Southwest Regional tournament after having the half-dozen wrestlers finish sixth or better Saturday in the Class 2A district tournament.
Among the P-O wrestlers advancing are Hunter Weitoish (2nd, 160), Chase Chapman (3rd, 138), Parker Moore (3rd, 195), Nick Bryan (6th, 120), Austin Foster (6th, 145) and Tyler Anderson (6th, 220).
Rams’ Sharer earns district gold
Penns Valley’s Andrew Sharer came away with Class 2A district gold at 182 pounds Saturday, as the Rams sent four other wrestlers to the PIAA Southwest Regional tournament.
Sharer beat the No. 1 seed in Huntingdon’s Myles Baney and pinned him in 3:03.
Other Rams to advance to regionals include Clayton Royer (2nd, 138), Malachi DuVall (2nd, 152), Nate Long (5th, 126) and Chase Fleshman (6th, 106).
Bellefonte cruises past Shikellamy
The Red Raiders made quick work of Shikellamy on Tuesday with a 60-21 dual win.
Bellefonte won four bouts by forfeit and won another six by pin. Among the Red Raiders with falls were Lane Aikey (120 pounds), Jude Swisher (126), Alex Coppolo (132), Stephen Ivicic (170), Ethan Rossman (195) and Max Barrier (285).
Hockey
Little Lions pick up convincing win
State College goalie John Olsen made 32 saves Thursday as the Little Lions cruised to a 6-1 win over Altoona at Pegula Ice Arena.
State College out-shot Altoona by a 45-34 clip, but Olsen made the difference.
Among the Little Lions with goals included Zander Faust (2), Adler Gable (2), Thomas Hay (1) and Robert Zimmerman (1). Faust and Zimmerman also added two assists apiece.
Altoona tied it up 1-1 in the second period, before State College put the game away by scoring five unanswered goals.
