State College senior Maya Bokunewicz named to Class 6A All-State girls’ basketball team
The PIAA winter sports season may have abruptly ended without champions in some sports, that doesn’t mean there weren’t all-state selections.
State College senior girls’ basketball star Maya Bokunewicz was named to the Pennsylvania Sportswriters’ Class 6A All-State team Monday morning.
The senior guard led the Little Lions with 20.8 points per game and scored her 1,000th career point during her junior season at State High.
With her final season in the books, and in-person schooling canceled for the remainder of the academic year, Bokunewicz’s next step will be her enrollment at Rice University. She signed with the Rice women’s basketball program on Nov. 13 and is set to enroll for the 2020-21 academic year.
Rice women’s basketball coach Tina Langley said the senior guard’s versatility is part of the reason the program offered her a scholarship.
“As a long wing Maya brings a unique skill set that will allow her to play multiple positions and impact the game in many ways,” Langley said in a release when Bokunewicz signed with the program. “She can score or create for others and her basketball IQ makes her a great fit for our system.”
Bokunewicz made the first team this season after she made the state’s third team as a junior.
