Philipsburg-Osceola boys’ basketball coach Matt Curtis resigns after 6 years at the helm

Philipsburg-Osceola will join Bellefonte among schools looking to hire a new boys’ basketball coach. Matt Curtis announced his resignation via the Philipsburg-Osceola boys’ basketball’s Twitter account Monday evening.

Curtis coached the Mounties for the past six seasons and won only 15 games in his first five years at the helm before leading his team to 10 wins during the 2019-20 season, according to MaxPreps.

He’s the third Centre County boys’ basketball coach to vacate his post this offseason after Bill Butterworth stepped down as Bald Eagle Area’s head coach at the end of the season and the school hired Kris Glunt, leaving his post at the same position at Bellefonte, to replace him.

The former Mounties head coach said remaining atop the program didn’t align with his future and would’ve eventually necessitated his resignation.

“For me to continue moving forward with my future goals, and after talking with the school board, I realized I was going to have to step down in the very near future,” his statement read.

Curtis said his decision was made especially difficult by its timing. His goal was to return the Mounties to a place of consistent competitiveness and said that time had come.

“I believe we have returned to that (level) and are about to break through to big things,” Curtis’ statement read. “So that made my decision even harder. This was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make and one I wasn’t fully prepared to make.”

While he’s resigning as the program’s head coach, Curtis said he plans to stick around and help the team as an assistant.

Curtis closed the statement by thanking the players, parents and students at Philipsburg-Osceola for their support during his tenure.

“I wanted to thank every single one of my current and former players for allowing me to coach you,” the statement read. “We took over this program six years ago and we have come so far from that time. All credit goes to you, the players.”
