Gov. Tom Wolf eases statewide restrictions to allow fans at sporting events
When athletes start their fall seasons, stands and bleachers might not be empty — following updated guidance from Gov. Tom Wolf.
In July, Wolf and Pennsylvania Department of Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine issued orders for sports that did not allow spectators at sporting events and recommended that school competition and practices be delayed until Jan. 1.
But on Wednesday, the Wolf administration updated state guidelines to allow fans at sporting events. Attendees count toward the statewide limitations on large gatherings — 25 or less inside and 250 or less outside — and must follow the statewide mandatory masking and social distancing order when arriving, attending and departing events.
Local governing bodies and school districts may impose more stringent requirements than those enacted by the state, and it will be up to each school to regulate how many fans will be permitted at games.
Last month, the PIAA, the governing body over Pennsylvania high school sports, voted 25-5 to allow member schools to proceed with fall sports at their own discretion.
