‘I’m thrilled,’ State High football coach Matt Lintal says as team is set to start season Oct. 2
State High football will return to competitive PIAA action next Friday. State College head football coach Matt Lintal confirmed to the Centre Daily Times in a text that his Little Lions will travel to Central Dauphin next weekend for their season opener.
“I am so grateful that our kids will have the opportunity to play a football game next Friday night,” he said. “Our team has stayed positive and focused on the things we could control throughout the summer and fall. They are excited for the game and certainly looking to make the most of this and every opportunity they are afforded. I am thrilled for them to have the chance to play next week.”
The Little Lions were unable to play due to the school district’s athletic plan that only allowed the football team to take part in competition with other schools if State High returned to in-person learning. Superintendent Bob O”Donnell announced Thursday that students would begin in-person learning again on Monday.
However, the football players will continue to learn remotely due to the high-risk nature of the sport when it comes to COVID-19. Players will remain remote until two weeks after their football season ends.
The team has six games remaining on its regular season schedule that — if uninterrupted — will run from Oct. 2 - Nov. 6.
