Mid-week HS roundup: Here’s what happened from April 19-21 in Centre County high school sports

Here’s what happened in Centre County high school sports from April 19-21.

Baseball

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 6-2 to DuBois Area Catholic School on Saturday.

Penns Valley vs. Saint Joseph’s: A big fifth inning helped propel Penns Valley over Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy, 10-6, on Monday. The two teams were tied at 5 apiece after five innings. But five runs in the bottom of the sixth helped the Rams build a lead that the WolfPack was unable to overcome. Dakota Brodzina picked up the win, allowing two hits and one run, and striking out five in relief for starter Ty Houtz. On the offensive side, Houtz went 3-for-4 , with two runs scored and an RBI. Mason Lieb has a team-high three RBIs and one double.

State College: State College beat Cedar Cliff 4-1 on Tuesday. Garret Holzapfel earned the win for the Little Lions, allowing and six hits and a run, and striking out five over five innings. Ryan Terrizzi threw two innings in relief. On offense, Matt Lingenfelter hit a home run for the Little Lions, while Ethan Schimony went 2-for-2. Matt Allison had a game-high two RBIs.

BEA: Bald Eagle Area shut out Huntingdon 5-0 on Tuesday. Wyatt McClain picked up the win, allowing three hits and striking out five over five innings. Wyatt Coakley threw two innings in relief. Noah Williamson and McGwire Heverly both went 2-for-4, while Hayden Vaughn had a double and two RBIs and Ryan Kresovich went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley beat Clearfield 10-5 on Tuesday to improve to 3-4. Mason Lieb earned the win, allowing four hits and three runs, and striking out eight over five innings. Maclain Welshans pitched two innings in relief. Lieb went 4-for-5 with three singles and a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Ty Houts was 3-for5 with three singles and a run scored, while Rylee Brungart was 3-for-4 with three singles and a run.

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola lost 10-2 to Central on Tuesday. Nathan Gustkey led the offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Ryan Whitehead took the loss, allowing nine hits and nine runs, while striking out six over four innings. Gavin Emigh pitched two innings in relief.

Lacrosse

State College girls: State College dominated Northern 15-1 on Tuesday to improve to 7-1.

Softball

Penns Valley: Penns Valley shut out Clearfield 5-0 on Monday. Kendra Bumgardner picked up the win with nine strikeouts. Clearfield’s Emma Hipps took the loss, striking out eight. The Rams out-hit the Bison, 10-1. Avery Dinges hit a home run for the Rams, with an RBI and a run scored. Avelyn Van Heyst had a team-high three RBIs, with two doubles.

BEA: Bald Eagle Area shut out Huntingdon 10-0 in six innings on Monday. Madison Peters picked up the win, allowing three hits and no runs, with eight strikeouts. Peters also had a strong night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Mara Hockenberry led the team in hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola’s Abby Vaux hit a walk-off home run on an 0-2 count on Monday to lift the Mounties over Central, 6-5. Jordan McDonald and Mykenna Bryan also homered for the Mounties. Karissa Taylor picked up the win, taking over for freshman Daisy Wayland. Taylor allowed three hits and a run, striking out four over five innings.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 17-2 to Juniata Valley on Monday.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte beat Tyrone 5-1 on Monday. Lexi Rogers went the distance for the win, allowing three hits and a run, and striking out 14. Hanna Lauck went 2-for-4 for the Red Raiders with two runs, while Makenna Port pitched in a hit and an RBI, and Lily Gardner was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

BEA vs. P-O: Bald Eagle Area beat Philipsburg-Osceola 4-1 on Tuesday. P-O’s Jordan McDonald lined the first pitch the of the game over the fence in left-center field. Then BEA responded in the bottom of the first with three runs of its own, and added another in the bottom of the fifth. Winning pitcher Madison Peters gave up six hits, struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.

State College: State College beat Cedar Cliff 14-3 on Tuesday. Olivia Herncane led the offense with three hits and five RBIs. Zia Bodnar picked up the win, throwing eight strikeouts over seven innings.

Boys’ tennis

State College: State College lost 4-1 to Carlisle on Tuesday, falling to 7-6. The lone winner for the Little Lions was the doubles team of Kueyoung Kim and Jerry Zhang (6-0, 7-5).

track & field

Bellefonte: The Bellefonte boys’ and girls’ track and field teams beat Central (101-49, and 106-44, respectively) but lost to Tyrone (99-51 and 77-73, respectively). Winning first place overall for the Red Raiders were: the girls’ 4x800-relay team; the boys’ 4x800-meter relay team; Mia Elmore in the 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run; Logan Naspinski in the 300-meter hurdles; Gabrielle Deitrich in discus; John Besch in shot put and William Brininger in javelin.

P-O vs. Penns Valley boys: Philipsburg-Osceola boys’ track and field beat Penns Valley 96-54 on Tuesday. Dual meet winners were: Penns Valley’s 4x800-meter relay team; Penns Valley’s Butler (100-meter hurdles); Penns Valley’s Ilgen (100-meter dash); Penns Valley’s Colwell (1,600-meter run; 800-meter run); P-O’s Little (400-meter dash; 200-meter dash); P-O’s 4x100-meter relay team; P-O’s Pelesky (300-meter hurdles; pole vault); Penns Valley’s Smith (3,200-meter run); Penns Valley’s 4x400-meter relay team; P-O’s Rishel (high jump); P-O’s McClenahan (long jump; triple jump) and P-O’s Kephart (shot put; discus; javelin).

P-O vs. BEA boys: Bald Eagle Area beat Philipsburg-Osceola 83-67 on Tuesday. Dual meet winners were: BEA’s 4x800-meter relay team; BEA’s Yetsko (100-meter hurdles; 300-meter hurdles); BEA’s Irvin (100-meter dash; 200-meter dash; long jump); P-O’s Muckey (1,600-meter run; 800-meter run); P-O’s Little (400-meter dash); P-O’s 4x400-meter relay team; BEA’s Taylor (pole vault); P-O’s Rishel (high jump); P-O’s McClenahan (triple jump); BEA’s Knepp (shot put; discus) and Fry (javelin).

P-O vs. Penns Valley girls: Penns Valley girls’ beat Philipsburg-Osceola 80-69 on Tuesday. Dual meet winners were: Penns Valley’s 4x800-meter relay team; Penns Valley’s Velasquez (110-meter hurdles; 300-meter hurdles); Penns Valley’s Sailors (100-meter dash); Penns Valley’s Hull (1,600-meter run); Penns Valley’s Stitzer (400-meter run; 800-meter run); P-O’s 4x100-meter relay; Penns Valley’s Beben (200-meter dash); Penns Valley’s Dune (3,200-meter run); Penns Valley’s 4x400-meter relay team; P-O’s Butler (pole vault); Penns Valley’s Upcraft (high jump); P-O’s Bainey (long jump; triple jump); P-O’s Hutton (shot put; discus) and P-O’s Phillips (javelin).

P-O vs. BEA girls: Bald Eagle Area girls’ beat Penns Valley 88-62 on Tuesday. Dual meet winners were: BEA’s 4x800-meter relay team; BEA’s Veneziano (110-meter hurdles; 100-meter dash; 300-meter hurdles); P-O’s Cook (1,600-meter run); BEA’s McHenry (400-meter dash; 800-meter run); P-O’s 4x100-meter relay team; BEA’s 200-meter dash; P-O’s Timko (3,200-meter run); BEA’s 4x400-meter relay; P-O’s Butler (pole vault); BEA’s Grieb (high jump); P-O’s Bainey (triple jump); BEA’s Holler (shot put; discus) and BEA’s Hoover (javelin).
