Here’s what happened in Centre County high school sports from May 3-5.
Baseball
Penns Valley: Penns Valley beat Juniata 4-1 on Monday to improve to 5-6. The Rams had five players with multiple hits. Maclain Welshans was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs; Mason Lieb was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI; Hayden Houser was 2-for-3 with two singles, and Miles Brooks and Ty Houtz each went 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored. Houtz was credited with the win.
SJCA: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy split a doubleheader with Williamsburg on Monday. Saint Joseph’s won Game 1, 14-7, then lost 5-3 in Game 2.
BEA vs. Penns Valley: Bald Eagle Area beat Penns Valley 4-2 on Monday. Dillon Barnyack went the distance for the Eagles, surrendering two hits and two runs while striking out six and walking two. Mason Lieb was credited with the loss, allowing three hits and two runs, while striking out nine and walking three. Top hitters for the Eagles were Alex Gavlock and Kyler Cunningham, who each had RBI singles, McGwire Heverly, with a double, and Myles Stover, who went 1-for-4, got on base four times and scored three times. Ty Houtz and Miles Brooks both scored for the Rams, and Lieb hit an RBI.
State College: State College lost 9-1 to Chambersburg on Monday. The Little Lions were unable to record a hit in the game. Garret Holzapfel was credited with the loss, allowing eight runs and eight hits with one strikeout over 3.2 innings.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte lost both games of a doubleheader to Central on Tuesday. Bellefonte lost the first game 15-7, getting out-hit 13-10. Bobby Marsh, Braedyn Kormanic and Max Rogers each collected multiple hits for the Red Raiders. Derek Fravel had a team-high three RBIs. Seth Shuey was credited with the loss, allowing nine runs on seven hits and striking out one over 3.2 innings. Bellefonte came up just short in Game 2, falling 6-5 despite a seventh inning rally. The Red Raiders were down by five runs heading into the bottom of the seventh. Walks by Nick Capparelle, Derek Fravel and Suhey and a sacrifice fly by Rogers got the Red Raiders within one, but it wasn’t enough. Rogers led the Red Raiders on offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Derek Fravel took the loss, surrendering six runs on five hits and striking out seven over four innings.
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola beat Huntingdon 14-2 in 4.5 innings on Tuesday to improve to 7-4. Ryan Whitehead, TJ Wildman, Dave Meersand and Nathan Gustkey each had two hits. Whitehead and Meersand also each had two RBIs to add to that. Whitehead picked up the win, surrendering two runs and four hits, and striking out eight.
Lacrosse
Bellefonte girls: Bellefonte lost 16-4 to Lewisburg on Monday.
Bellefonte boys: Bellefonte lost 17-5 to Lewisburg on Monday.
State College girls: State College beat Cedar Cliff 15-3 on Tuesday to improve to 11-1 on the season. Sydney O’Donnell had three goals and five draw controls. Ariana Angus had two goals and three assists, Leah Moyer had two goals and two assists, Phebe Herlocher had two goals and on assist and Anna Collins added two goals to round out players with multiple goals. Grace Jones had 11 saves in the win.
State College boys: State College beat Cedar Cliff 13-2 on Tuesday.
Softball
SJCA: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 15-0 to Southern Huntingdon on Saturday.
BEA vs. Penns Valley: Bald Eagle Area beat Penns Valley 13-12 on Monday. Madison Peters picked up the win with four strikeouts, three walks and one hit batter. Allison O’Brien was credited with the loss, with two strikeouts, four walks and two hit batters. Maddie Perry’s three-run home run highlighted the Eagles’ effort at the plate. Perry also had a single and a run scored. Ava Stere added a double, two singles and two runs scored. Kendra Bumgardner homered for the Rams, and also had a single, three runs scored and two RBIs. Ellie Coursen had a team-high three RBIs, a single, double and two runs scored.
SJCA: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 16-1 to West Branch on Monday.
Penns Valley: Penns Valley shut out Huntingdon 8-0 on Tuesday. Avery Dinges had 15 strikeouts and two walks in the win. Kailen Winkelblech had two doubles and a run scored. Cheyanne Wolfe had two singles, two RBIs, a stolen base and a run scored, while Scotty Dinges had two singles, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base.
State College: State College lost 11-2 to Chambersburg on Tuesday. Chambersburg out-hit the Little Lions 13-8. Olivia McTavish led the Little Lions’ offense, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Ava Bierly went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Zia Bodnar took the loss, with five strikeouts over seven innings.
Boys tennis
State College: State College’s doubles team of Josh Davis and Jerry Zhang lost (6-2, 6-0) in the quarterfinals of the District 6 Class 3A doubles championships.
Track & field
Bellwood Invite: Bald Eagle Area, Philipsburg-Osceola and Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy all participated in the Bellwood-Antis High School Invitational on Monday. Winning first place overall were: Saint Joseph’s Clare Marsh in the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles; Saint Joseph’s girls’ 4x400-meter relay team; BEA’s Owen Irvin in the long jump and BEA’s Abigail Hoover in javelin.
Penns Valley: Penns Valley competed against Clearfield and Punxsutawney on Tuesday. The girls’ team had 74 points, to beat both Punxsutawney (64) and Clearfield (50). The boys’ team scored 45 points to come in third place to Punxsutawney (81) and Clearfield (63). Winning first place overall for the Rams were: Jadyn Butler (100-meter hurdles); Kelsey Hull (1,600-meter run); Colton Sands (1,600-meter run); the girls’ 4x100-meter relay team; Abigail Stitzer (400-meter dash; 800-meter run); Brendan Colwell (800-meter run); Leah Beben (200-meter dash; high jump; long jump); Anna Stitzer (3,200-meter run); Daniel Kelly (3,200-meter run); Aidan Culver (high jump) and Allison Sailors (triple jump).
Bellefonte: Bellefonte hosted a meet with East Juniata and Hollidaysburg on Tuesday. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams came in second to Hollidaysburg in tri-meet scoring. The girls’ team scored 38 points to Hollidaysburg’s 98 and East Juniata’s 13, and the boys’ team scored 47 points to Hollidaysburg’s 67 and East Juniata’s 36. Winning first place overall were: Austin Melius (1,600-meter run); the boys’ 4x800-meter relay team; J.D. Besch (discus; shot put); William Brininger (javelin); Kerri Shutika (200-meter dash); Mia Elmore (1,600-meter run); Gabrielle Deitrich (discus) and Ella Underwood (javelin).
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola competed against Northern Cambria and Seeds of Faith on Tuesday. The girls’ team came out on top, while the boys’ split 1-1.
