High school playoffs roundup: Results from Thursday’s baseball and softball games
Four local baseball and softball teams were in playoff action Thursday afternoon. The Bald Eagle Area and Philipsburg-Osceola baseball teams took part in the PIAA District 6 Class 3A quarterfinals, the Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy baseball team was in the PIAA District 6 Class 1A quarterfinals and the Bellefonte softball team played in the PIAA District 6 Class 5A semifinals.
Here’s how all four teams fared.
Bald Eagle Area baseball
BEA team fell 2-0 on the road to Forest Hills. The Eagles and Rangers were scoreless through five innings but the Rangers broke the scoreless tie in the sixth to take the two-run lead. Bald Eagle was unable to overcome the deficit.
The Eagles had opportunities early, with a two-out double in the first inning and runners on second and third to close the second inning, but couldn’t plate any of the runners.
The loss eliminates the Eagles from the postseason and brings their overall record to 13-6 to close out the season.
Bellefonte softball
The Raiders were once again led by star pitcher Lexi Rogers, who was excellent once again from the circle and helped the team to a 9-2 victory over Hollidaysburg. Rogers pitched all seven innings and allowed only a single earned run while striking out eight and walking three.
She gave up the lone earned run, followed by an unearned run, in the second inning to give Hollidaysburg a 2-0 lead, but it was all Bellefonte from there. Madison Melius kicked off the Raider scoring with a solo home run in the third inning and Lily Gardner followed up by doubling and scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game at two in the third inning.
The Raiders added five more runs in the fourth inning and two more on a Rogers two-run home run in the sixth inning to close out the game’s scoring.
Rogers went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game with three RBIs, a walk and a run scored, while Melius went 2-for-3 as well with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Bellefonte will move on to face Central Mountain for the PIAA District 6 Class 5A title on May 26 at St. Francis University. The game’s first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Philipsburg-Osceola baseball
The Mountaineers had their season come to an end with a 5-2 loss on the road to Tyrone Thursday afternoon.
They were able to get on the scoreboard first on a balk in the third inning and added a second run on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. However, Tyrone came storming back from there, scoring five unanswered runs to earn the victory.
The loss drops Philipsburg-Osceola below .500 at 8-9 and brings the team’s season to a close.
Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy baseball
The SJCA baseball team lost its first round matchup with Juniata Valley Thursday afternoon on the road. The WolfPack fell 5-2 to bring their season to an end. They led 2-0 in the sixth inning but gave up five unanswered runs to close out the game.
The loss drops their record to 5-10 on the season.
