HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Sept. 6-11 in Centre County high school sports

The fall sports season is in full gear. State College girls cross country won the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State, while Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s girls team was second at the Red, White & Blue Classic. Bald Eagle Area’s girls soccer team got off to a hot start, and more.

Here are some of the highlights of Week 3:

Cross country

Philipsburg-Osceola: P-O’s girls and boys teams both picked up wins against West Branch on Thursday. The girls, which won 16-47, swept the top four places. Jaylee Cook placed first in 26:14, Manna Potter was was second in 26:59, Kylie Timko was third in 26:26, and Audrey Smith was fourth in 27:45. Evelyn Raker placed sixth in 28:26. The boys won 21-39, with Chad Muckey leading the pack, finishing in 19:19. He was followed by Chad Frantz, who was second in 20:42. Sean Myers was fifth in 25:11, Tyke Phillips sixth in 26:26 and Braedan Fenton seventh in 26:40.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s girls team placed second out of 10 teams in Class 1A on Friday at the Red White and Blue Classic, while runners from the boys team also competed. Top finishers for the girls team were Amber Fisher (second in 21:07) and Evelyn Reynolds (sixth in 21:44). Top finishers for the boys team were Colin Simander (14th in 18:11) abd Josh Hyman (25th in 18:39).

Spiked Shoe Invitational: Runners from State College and Penns Valley competed in Penn State’s Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational Friday morning. The State College girls team placed first, with a score of 50, out of 11 teams. The Little Lions were led by strong performances by Marlee Kwasnica, who finished second in 19:07.3, Amy Devan (eighth in 20:04.7) and Natalie Koncoski (10th in 20.05). Rounding out the team’s top seven were Chloe Poindexter (16th in 20:55.8), Grace Morningstar (18th in 21:06.8), Abigail Bigger (19th in 21:09.6) and Maya Ikenberry (20th in 21:11.3). Penns Valley placed eighth with 209. The Rams were led by a top-10 performance by Anna Stitzer, who placed sixth in 20:00.4. Alexis Durn finished 22nd in 21:14.3. On the boys side, State College finished third with 65 points. Charles Endres and Nick Sloff led the Little Lions, finishing eighth in 16:28 and ninth in 16:29.4, respectively. Trent Dinant was 14th in 17:00, Tony Tzolov was 16th in 17:18, and Griffin Selber 18th in 17:41.4. Rounding out the top seven for State College were Ethan Morningstar (21st in 17:40.4) and Sam Endres (22nd in 17:55.7). Penns Valley boys also sent a few runners, led by McLain Reaver-Shervinskie, who finished 42nd in 19:01. “The team continues to work hard and run with grit and determination,” Penns Valley coach Lynda Federinko said. “With such a young team, they show improvement each race.”

Field hockey

State College: State College won an overtime thriller on Wednesday, topping Carlisle 2-1. With Carlisle leading 1-0 with 9:04 left in the fourth quarter, State College’s Olivia Miller collected on an offensive rebound to tie the game. The Little Lions earned two penalty corners in overtime, with Leah Moyer hitting the back of the boards after collecting a bouncing pass from Phebe Herlocher for the win. State College out-shot Carlisle 22-17 and had 15 penalty corners to Carlisle’s seven. Molly Schreiner had 13 saves in goal and Madi Gaul had two defensive saves for the Little Lions.

Golf

BEA (boys): Bald Eagle Area’s golfers Noah Foltz and Jeffre Pifer were both able to bring down their scores from last week when taking on Sugar Valley on Tuesday at Belles Springs Golf Course. Foltz placed second of the seven golfers, shooting an 87. Pifer shot an 119.

State College (boys): State College placed third at a Commonwealth League match at Cumberland Valley on Tuesday. Central Dauphin was first with 307, followed by Cumberland Valley (319), then State College with 321. State College’s John Olsen was the medalist, shooting a 71 (+1). Max Wager and Joey Sabol tied for 12th with 82.

P-O and Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte (173) finished second and Philipsburg-Osceola (182) third in a four-team match with Hollidaysburg (167) and Clearfield (239) on Wednesday. Bellefonte’s Riley Clute was the medalist with a 46. Emmalin Pringle shot a 61 and Sydney Hamilton 66 for the Raiders. Abby Vaux led the Mounties with 57, followed by Camden Potter with 61 and Ivy Reed with 64.

Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte (443) finished third in a match with Altoona (413) and Central (413) on Wednesday. Isaak Bloom tied for second with 80, one stroke out of first place. Evan Braughler shot a 87, Davis Corman 88, Keith Hamilton 89, and Michael Henry 99.

Saint Joseph’s (boys): Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy (361) came out on top of a four-team match with Hollidaysburg (372), Everett (450) and Tussey Mountain (507) on Wednesday. Saint Joseph’s Tim Peters was the medalist, shooting a 73. Dmitri Cornali shot a 92, Chris Warner 97 and Jun Park 99.

P-O and Penns Valley (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola (384) went 1-5 in a match at Huntingdon on Thursday. Top scorers for the Mounties were: Ollie Harpster 92, Siler Dixon 94, Zach Kolbe 98 and Logan Philippi, 100. Penns Valley (475) went 0-5. Top scorers for the Rams were: Grenoble 105, Kubalak 114, Butler 124 and Feltenberger 132

Soccer

P-O (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola lost 4-3 to Clearfield in its season opener on Tuesday. Ashton Crownover and Carson Long scored for the Mounties. Each also had an assist.

P-O (girls): Philipsburg-Osceola lost 10-2 to Clearfield on Tuesday. Schenley Farrell and Chloe Matson scored for the Mounties. The Bison out-shot the Mounties 21-7.

BEA vs. Bellefonte (girls): Bald Eagle Area beat its rival Bellefonte 2-1 on Tuesday. Abby Hoover and Adrienne Hacker both scored for the Eagles. Sara Proctor scored for the Raiders. MacKenzie Vozniak had two saves for the Eagles, while Keira Whitman had 12 saves for the Raiders and Emily Culp had two.

BEA vs. P-O (girls): Bald Eagle Area kept its hot streak going Wednesday, topping Philipsburg-Osceola 2-1 after trailing early. Falen McHenry scored both goals for the Eagles, and Abby Hoover had an assist. Schenley Farrell scored for the Mounties, with an assist form Chloe Matson. Kinley Bender had nine saves for the Mounties and BEA’s MacKenzie Vozniak had four. BEA out-shot P-O 18-6. “What a gritty win,” Eagles coach Jared Moore said. “Down 1-0 at the half the girls dug deep down and pulled out a second half win!”

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s boys soccer team, which is made of boy and girls, lost 2-1 to Juniata Mennonite School on Thursday.

BEA vs. Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte beat Bald Eagle Area 3-1 on Thursday. Gabe Foster scored the lone goal for the Eagles, off an assist from Carter Stere.

BEA vs. P-O (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola got its first win of the season on Thursday when the Mounties defeated Bald Eagle Area, 3-2. Carson Long had the hat trick, with assists from Evan Bock and Alex Godin. Carter Stere and Noah Giedroc had goals for the Eagles.

State College (boys): State College tied 1-1 with Chambersburg on Thursday.

Penns Valley (boys): Penns Valley rolled to a 13-0 win over Tyrone on Thursday.

Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley fell 6-2 to Mountain League foe Tyrone on Thursday in its season opener. Scoring for the Rams were Cate Goodwin (assist by Julianna Lovallo) at 2:03, and Ceci Falls (assist by Ellie Brinker) at 76:52. Penns Valley was out-shot 19-14. Chamiqua Gentzel made nine saves for the Rams.

Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, defeating Moshannon Valley 9-3. Scoring for the Rams were: Scotty Dinges at 5:16; Ceci Falls (assist by Paige Dobson) at 6:16; Aliza Stover (assist by Dinges) at 19:32; Cate Goodwin (assist by Dobson) at 21:58; Goodwin (assist by Julianna Lovallo) at 36:59; Dinges (assist by Falls) at 43:58, Goodwin (assist by Ellie Brinker) at 48:34; own goal (Brinker) at 50:21; and Stover (assist by Brinker) at 60:14. Penns Valley out-shot Moshannon Valley 29-12. Chamiqua Gentzel and Noelle Webb combined for six saves. “While we’re pleased with our performance in the attack, we still have work to do to shore things up defensively,” coach Andrew Beverly said. “Scotty Dinges got us off to a great start and led the line well with Cate Goodwin. Ellie Brinker and Paige Dobson had excellent games in the midfield for us, as well.”

Tennis

State College: State College fell 3-2 to Wyoming Seminary on Friday. Singles results were: Ilana Rosentha def. Quiana Guo (SC) 2-6, 6-3,6-1; Kelly Steel(SC) def. Ella Kryper 6-2, 6-3; and Margaret Mihalek def. Madeline Miller(SC) 2-6,6-4,6-0. Doubles: Dominica Delya/Victoria Martinez def. Allison Norloff/Emily Zhang(SC) 6-0, 6-1; and Marissa Xu/Juju Dye def. Victoria Smolivitz/Bridgit Dowd 6-3, 6-4. The Little Lions fall to 4-2. “Wyoming Sem was a solid team but we looked tired today and had trouble finishing matches,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “We will continue to work on managing academics and time on court in an effort to find the best combination for this team.”

Volleyball

State College: State College beat Chambersburg 3-0 (25-9, 25-16 and 25-16) in its season opener on Tuesday. Stat leaders were: Sophie Wales with 5 aces; Claire Jordan with 12 kills and 8 digs; Sam Shala with 8 kills, 10 assists and 8 digs; Kate Lally with 16 assists and 2 terminal blocks; “Good to start the season with a win. We played a really clean first set,” State College coach Chad Weight said. “As long as we continue to fix the little things day by day, we’ll compete.”

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 3-0 (11-25; 19-25; 14-25) to Juniata Senior High School on Wednesday. Stat leaders were: Madison Mazza with 2 kills and 2 aces; Car Burwell with two digs; Sam Zally with 5 blocks and an ace; and Madie Coskren with 2 blocks.

Philipsburg-Osceola: P-O started its season out with a win Thursday, beating Tyrone 3-1 (17-25, 25-11, 25-16, and 25-15). State leaders were: Janey Johnson with 17 digs; Jayden Perks with 5 aces and 4 blocks; Kalista Butler with 30 assists; Abby Lumadue with 3 blocks and Reese Hazelton with 19 kills, 9 service points, 4 aces and 18 digs.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost in three sets to Bishop Guilfoyle on Thursday.

State College: State College beat District 6 rival Altoona 3-1 (25-23, 26-24, 23-25 and 25-11) on Thursday. Stat leaders were: Clair Jordan had 13 kills and 12 digs, 5 aces and 2 terminal blocks; Kate Lally with 20 assists and 8 kills; Sam Shala with 10 kills, 9 assists and 12 digs; Iris Archibald with 13 digs; and Molly Thompson with 12 digs. “Although we didn’t play particularly well as a whole, it was good to persevere and get the win,” State College coach Chad Weight said.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte beat Clearfield in straight sets (25-17, 25-13 and 25-8) to open its season on Thursday. Stat leaders were: Carlee Pepperman with 8 kills, 3 aces and 6 digs; Grace Novitsky had 8 aces and 2 blocks; Carley Clarkson had 3 aces; and Madison Melius had 3 aces, 4 kills and 12 assists.

BEA: Bald Eagle Area kicked off its season at the Bulldog Invitational at Wilson High School in Berks County. The Eagles started the tournament by splitting sets (19-25 and 25-22) against Southern Lehigh, the No. 8-ranked Class 3A team in the PA Volleyball Coaches Association rankings. The Eagles were ranked No. 7 in Class 2A. BEA then beat Palmyra in two sets (25-17 & 25-14). The Eagles were then defeated 0-2 (25-19 & 25-10) by Wilson, and fell 0-2 to Bishop Shanahan (25-19 & 25-13) to end their tournament.
