HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Sept. 13-18 in Centre County high school sports

Philipsburg-Osceola athletes were busy this week rewriting the record books.

P-O boys soccer rolled to a 13-0 win over Tyrone on Monday, with Carson Long breaking the school’s 25-year-old single-game assists record and Alex Godin snapping the school’s 11-year-old single-game goals record. Just a couple days later, cross country runner Chad Muckey ran to a first-place finish in a tri-meet with Bellefonte and Penns Valley, snapping another school record with his time of 17:07.

Here are some of the highlights of Week 4:

Cross country

BEA: Bald Eagle Area’s lone varsity runner Colton Wagner ran a 20:43 against Clearfield on Tuesday.

P-O, PV, Bellefonte: Philipsburg-Osceola, Penns Valley and Bellefonte’s boys and girls teams participated in a tri-meet on Wednesday in Spring Mills. P-O’s Chad Muckey placed first on the boys’ side overall, breaking a school record in 17:07. He was followed by Bellefonte’s Chase Ebeling in 17:36, Bellefonte’s Alex Crist in 18:03, Penns Valley’s McLain Reaver-Shervinskie in 18:52 and Bellefonte’s Alex Mansfield in 19:27. In team competition, Bellefonte beat Penns Valley (15-50) and P-O (22-39), and P-O beat Penns Valley 15-50. Penns Valley’s Anna Stitzer finished first overall on the girls side in 19:36. She was followed by teammate Alexis Durn in 24:33, P-O’s Jaylee Cook in 25:14; P-O’s Manna Potter in 25:42 and P-O’s Rylee Timco in 25:44. In team competition, Penns Valley beat both P-O (28-29) and Bellefonte (21-35), and P-O beat Bellefonte (19-42). “Today the younger girls stepped up and did what they needed to do to secure the win over Bellefonte and PO,” Penns Valley coach Lynda Federinko said. “Anna Stitzer ran a remarkable race nearly breaking the course record and Alexis Durn fought through an injury to secure the second spot.”

P-O: Philipsburg-OSceola competed at the Ben Bloser Bulldog Invitational at Big Spring High School in Newville on Saturday. The Mounties had two medalists, in Chad Muckey, who placed first in 17:09, and Scott Frantz, who took 26th in 19:49. The highest finisher on the girls side was Jaylee Cook, who finished 44th in 24:01.

Field hockey

State College: State College beat Chambersburg 5-0 on Monday to improve to 4-1 on the season. Joelle Bartlett opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal in the second quarter. The Little Lions then added four more goals in the third quarter. Phebe Herlocher scored twice, while Maddy Shomo and Ella Tambroni each added goals. Olivia Miller and Sydney O’Donnell each had an assist. State College earned seven penalty corners, while keeping Chambersburg to 0. The Little Lions defense limited Chambersburg’s shots to zero.

State College: State College beat Cumberland Valley 2-1 on Thursday. Scoring for the Little Lions were Maddy Shomo off a Phebe Herlocher assist, and Olivia Miller. State College had 11 shots and four penalty corners, while Cumberland Valley had 13 shots and five penalty corners.

Golf

Mountain League match (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola, Bellefonte and Penns Valley and golfers from Bald Eagle Area participated in a Mountain League match with four other teams at the Philipsburg Elks Lodge & Country Club on Monday. Bellefonte finished third as a team with 339, 10 points back from first-place finisher Tyrone. P-O was fourth with 347, and Penns Valley seventh with 446. Bellefonte’s Isaac Bloom finished in a three-way tie for first with 77. Results for Centre County schools were: Bellefonte: Isaac Bloom 77, Evan Braughler 86, Davis Corman 88, Michael Henry 88, Caleb Stock 89, Keith Hamilton 90; P-O: Oliver Harpster 81, Colby Hahan 85, Logan Phillipi 87, Zach Kolbe 94, Jake Desimone 94, Dixon 113; Penns Valley: Calvin Grenoble 97, Hayden Feltenberger 115, Richie Butler 116, Cameron Kubalak 118; and BEA: Noah Foltz, 93; and Jeffre Pifer, 100.

State College (boys): State College competed in a Commonwealth League match on Monday. The Little Lions tied for first with Central Dauphin with 334 points. State College’s Luke Janac was the medalist, shooting 78 (+6). John Olsen was second with 79. AJ Corson shot 86, Thomas Hay 88, Joey Sabol 89, Solomon Liebert 90, Tanner Mona 91 and Leighton Smithwick 95.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s fell 412-468 to Altoona on Monday. Saint Joseph’s Tim Peters was the medalist, shooting an even par of 70. Other results for Saint Joseph’s were: Cornali 87, Warner 88, Park 105, Nichols 117.

Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte beat Mifflin County 5-4 on Tuesday.

State College (boys): State College competed in a Commonwealth League match on Tuesday. The Little Lions finished in second with 308, behind first-place Central Dauphin’s 300. John Olsen finished second overall, shooting an even par of 71. Luke Janac tied for sixth with 76. Max Wager shot 79, AJ Corson 82, Tanner Mona 82, Joey Sabol 86 and Solomon Liebert 92.

Mountain League match (girls): Philipsburg-Osceola and Bellefonte and two golfers from Penns Valley participated in a Mountain League match on Wednesday. P-O finished second as a team, with 173 to first-place Hollidaysburg’s 158. Bellefonte had 184. Scores for P-O were: Abby Vaux 53, Camden Potter 60, Ivy Reed 60, Olivia Hutton 62, Lauren Sinclair 67, and Jocey Williams 74.

Mountain League match (boys): Bellefonte, Penns Valley, Philipsburg-Osceola and the golfers from Bald Eagle Area participated in a Mountain League match at Nittany Country Club on Thursday. Bellefonte finished second in the team standings, shooting 335. P-O was third with 342 and Penns Valley was seventh with 445. Tyrone was first with 329. Isaac Bloom led Bellefonte with a 78, four strokes off of medalist Andon Suchan, of Huntingdon. Other results for Centre County golfers were: Bellefonte: Davis Corman 83, Keith Hamilton 84, Evan Braughler 90, Michael Henry 99, Caleb Stock 103; P-O: Oliver Harpster 79, Colby Hahn 80, Logan Phillipi 88, Kolbe 95, Jake Desimone 97, Cade Glace 107; Penns Valley: Calvin Grenoble 105, Cameron Kubalak 107, Richie Butler 112, Hayden Feltenberger 121; and BEA: Jeffre Pifer 95, Noah Foltz 99.

Penns Valley (boys): Penns Valley shut out Tyrone 13-0 on Sept. 9 to improve to 3-1. Scoring goals for the Rams were: Hayden Houser (assisted by Aiden Culver) at 6:55; Nate Long (assisted by Daniel Gray) at 36:50; Andrew Boeckel (assisted by Jack O’Donald) at 39:10; Boeckel (assisted by Alex King) at 40:46; Culver (assisted by Long) at 42:41; Long (assisted by Daniel Gray) at 42:55; King (assisted by Long) at 44:40; Culver (assisted by Gray) at 46:28; O’Donald (assisted by Gray) at 48:12; Gray (assisted by King) at 50:03; Houser (assisted by Culver) at 57:55; Aidan Korman (unassisted) at 75:35; and Culver (unassisted) at 77:38. Penns Valley out-shot Tyrone 19-2. Gavin Robb had one save for the Rams in the shutout. “I told the guys that our seven goals in the first 10 minutes of the half was one of the greatest ‘furious goal scoring festivals’ I’ve ever seen in my coaching career,” Penns Valley coach Ken Gore said. “They just flawlessly executed the fundamentals of passing, positioning, and finishing that we’ve been working on since the start of preseason.”

State College: State College beat Carlisle 3-0 on Monday. Davis Pagett scored twice (assisted by Rogers and Thurley) and Jacob Stephanovich added another goal (assisted by Owen Hollobaugh).

Penns Valley vs. Bellefonte (boys): Penns Valley and Bellefonte played to a 0-0 tie after two overtime periods on Monday. There was a total of 22 shots taken in the game, 15 belonging to Bellefonte and seven to Penns Valley. Junior goalkeeper Gavin Robb had a career performance for the Rams, tallying 12 saves. Bellefonte’s Quinn Tooker had four of his own. “My guys absolutely played their hearts out today. They were exhausted,” Penns Valley coach Ken Gore said. “Bellefonte is always a really good team and Scott (Martz) is a really good coach. I’m happy we were able to match up with them this afternoon. The best part for us is — my guys took the challenge from a great squad and continue to build the confidence that we can compete with any team on any given day.”

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 5-1 to Greenwood High School on Monday.

P-O (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola rewrote the school record books in a 13-0 dominating win over Tyrone on Monday. Not just one but two records were broken in the victory. Carson Long’s eight assists broke a 25-year-old record, previously held by Ryan Coble in 1996. Alex Godin’s six goals broke the school record set by Ryan Ling in 2010. Long also had three goals in the game, while Parker Matson, Gavin Emigh, Dawson Snyder, Shae Bainey, Evan Bock and Danny Gray also added goals. Greg Holt had one save in the Mounties’ shutout win.

BEA (boys): Bald Eagle Area beat Clearfield 2-0 on Monday. Noah Giedroc scored on a penalty kick, while Carter Stere scored with an assist from Kevin Taylor. Seth Koch earned the shutout in goal.

Penns Valley vs. Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte topped Penns Valley 2-1 on Tuesday. Scoring for Bellefonte were Liberty Fike (at 20:00) and Kerri Shutika (at 49:42). Cate Goodwin scored for the Rams (assisted by Ellie Brinker at 9:31). The raiders edged the Rams in shots, 13-12. Noelle Webb had eight saves for Penns Valley and Keira Whitman had eight for Bellefonte.

P-O (girls): Philipsburg-Osceola lost 6-2 to Tyrone on Wednesday. Scoring for the Mounties were Schenley Farrell, assisted by Chloe Matson, and Khendyl Sharrer, assisted by Lily Warlow. The Mounties were out-shot 36-16. Paige Rishel made 19 saves.

BEA (girls): Bald Eagle Area fell 3-1 to Clearfield on Wednesday. Falen McHenry scored for the Eagles, off an assist from Heather Leskovansky. BEA was out-shot 11-5. Mackenzie Vozniak had eight saves for the Eagles.

P-O (boys): P-O beat Huntingdon 1-0 on Wednesday to improve to 3-1. Carson Long scored the lone goal of the game, assisted by Ashton Crownover. Greg Holt had six saves in the shutout.

P-O vs. St. Joseph’s (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola beat Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy 5-4 on Thursday to improve to 4-1. Carson Long scored three goals and had one assist, while Alex Godin had one goal and one assist. Justin Ivicic headed in the game-winner on a pass from Ashton Crownover. Luke Surovec and Spencer Gigante each scored twice for the WolfPack.

BEA vs Penns Valley (girls): Bald Eagle Area beat Penns Valley 2-0 on Thursday. Scoring for Bald Eagle were Falen McHenry (at 19:44) and Heather Leskovansky (31:46). The Eagles out-shot the Rams 15-7. Noelle Webb had nine saves for the Rams while Mackenzie Vozniak had five for the Eagles.

State College (boys): State College lost 2-1 to Cumberland Valley on Thursday.

State College (girls): State College lost 3-0 to Cumberland Valley on Thursday.

P-O (girls): Philipsburg-Osceola beat Huntingdon 5-3 on Thursday. Lily Warlow scored three times, with one assist from Schenley Farrell. Farrell also assisted Khendyl Sharrer, then scored one herself. Paige Rishel made 15 saves. “The girls could have had a letdown this week with all that’s happened (injuries),” P-O coach Joe Matson said. “But they didn’t, and they should take pride in what they accomplished tonight.”

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 3-0 to Northumberland Christian School on Friday.

Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley beat Huntingdon 2-0 on Saturday. Cate Goodwin scored both of the Rams’ goals. Her first one came at 32:33 (assisted by Anna Bressler) and the second at 50:47 (assisted by Ceci Falls). Penns Valley out-shot Huntingdon 18-7. Noelle Webb had five saves for the Rams.

State College: State College swept Mifflin County 5-0 on Monday to improve to 5-2. Singles results were: Quiana Guo(SC) def. Olivia Kahley 6-0, 6-1; Kelly Steel(SC) def. Isabellie Wagner 6-0, 6-0; and Madeline Miller(SC) def. Ava Binder 6-1, 6-0. Doubles: Emily Zhang/Allison Norloff(SC) def. Lilly Riden/Ella Kwepp 6-0, 6-0; and Marissa Xu/Jordan Dye(SC) def. Kate Riden/Malanie Riang 6-0, 6-1.

Brynn McCaffery 6-4, 6-11; and Madeline Miller(SC) def. Evangaline Etnover 6-4, 6-1. Doubles: Emily Zhang/Allison Norloff(SC) def. Sam Houck/Danielle Offner 6-3, 6-3; and Marissa Xu/Jordan Dye(SC) def. Mari Nicholson/Natalie Isett 6-0, 6-1.

State College: State College swept Lower Dauphin 5-0 on Friday to improve to 8-2. Singles results were: Quiana Guo(SC) def. Mikhaela Merca 6-0, 6-1; Kelly Steel(SC) def. Maddie Foreman 6-1, 6-0; and Madeline Miller(SC) def. Chloe Krasley 6-1, 6-0. Doubles: Emily Zhang/Allison Norloff(SC) def. Emma Dickinson/Megan Mayberry 6-1, 6-0; and Marissa Xu/Jordan Dye(SC) def. Samantha Walker/Kate Hanft 6-0, 6-2.

Volleyball

State College: State College went 5-3 in pool play at the Bulldog Invitational last weekend: Exeter (2-0), Unionville (1-1), Cumberland Valley (2-0), and Pope John Paul (0-2). The Little Lions then lost 25-23 to Philipsburg-Osceola in the quarterfinal round.

P-O vs. Bellefonte: Coming off a 9-2 record at the Bulldog Invitational over the weekend, Philipsburg-Osceola added another win on Monday with a sweep of Bellefonte (25-15, 25-22, and 25-17). Stat leaders for P-O were: Janey Johnson, 5 service points and 3 aces; Kalista Butler, 27 assists; Reese Hazelton, 15 kills and 10 digs. Stat Leaders for Bellefonte were: Carlee Pepperman with 8 kills, 1 ace and 8 digs; Grace Novitsky with 3 blocks and 2 kills; Madison Melius with 16 assists, 3 blocks and a team-leading 10 digs; and Tayla Miller with 1 ace and 9 digs. The Mounties improved to 11-2 and 2-0 in league play.

BEA: Bald Eagle Area kicked off its regular season with a 3-2 win (25-12, 24-26, 25-9, 23-25, and 15-11) over Williamsport on Monday. Stat leaders for the Eagles were: Maddie Perry with 9 kills to go with 17 digs; Ava Stere with six kills and 20 digs; Claire Andrews had three terminal blocks and 6 kills; Olivia Boone had a team-high 26 digs to go with two aces; Peighton Brownson had a career-high four aces to lead the Eagles; and Meagan Reese led the offense with 20 assists, while Laura Ternet added 6.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley swept St. Mary’s Area (25-21, 25-20, 27-25) on Monday. Seniors Kailen Winkelblech and Cammie Upcraft shone on Senior Night. Winkelblech tallied 10 kills, 3 aces and 3 digs, while Upcraft added 6 kills and 4 blocks. Junior setter Julia Emel had 26 assists, while junior Ashlie Boyles had 9 digs and sophomore Ella Hadley added 10 kills.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 3-1 to Sugar Valley Rural Charter School on Monday.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley swept Clearfield (25-15, 25-12, 25-15) on Tuesday. Stat leaders for the Rams were Cammie Upcraft with 12 kills, 7 blocks and 2 service aces; Kailen Winkelblech had 10 kills and 3 digs; Maddie Butler had 12 digs; Ashlie Boyles and Laney Aston had 9 digs and Julia Emel had 18 assists.

BEA: Bald Eagle Area opened Mountain League play with a 3-2 loss (22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 13-25 and 15-11) to Tyrone on Tuesday. Stat leaders for the Eagles were: Ava Stere with 11 kills, Maddie Perry with 9 kills and Claire Andrews with 6 kills. Megan Reese had 29 assists. Olivia Boone had 27 digs while Perry added 20. Boone and Reese each had a pair of aces.

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola swept Hollidaysburg 3-0 (25-21, 25-18 and 25-20) on Wednesday to improve to 3-0. Stat leaders were: Janey Johnson with 10 digs; Kalista Butler with 10 service points and 26 assists; Reese Hazelton with 14 kills and 5 aces; Jayden Perks with 6 kills; and London Cutler with two blocks. Several Mounties were also recognized at that game for reaching milestones: Butler: 2000 assists; Cutler: 500 digs; Johnson: 500 digs; and Hazelton: 500 kills.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley fell 3-1 to Huntingdon on Thursday (23-25, 25-22, 18-25, 20-25). Stat leaders for the Rams were: senior outside hitter Kailen Winkelblech with 7 kills and 19 digs; senior middle blocker Cammie Upcraft with 8 kills, 3 blocks, 6 digs, and 2 service ace; sophomore libero Maddie Butler led the squad with 22 digs; senior defensive specialist Brianna Bressler added 13 digs, and sophomore right side Laney Aston added 5 kills and 7 digs.

State College: State College fell in five sets (17-25, 12-25, 25-21, 25-22, and 9-15) to Cumberland Valley on Thursday to fall to 2-1. Stat leaders for the Little Lions were: Kate Lally with 26 assists; Claire Jordan with 12 kills and Emi Shukla with 8 kills; Lally and Sophie Wales each had 3 aces; Molly Thompson led the team with 18 digs, while Iris Archibald and Jordan each had 11. “We didn’t play our best tonight but it was good that we battled back,” State College coach Chad Weight said. “We gave ourselves a chance but the continual climb I think got to us.”

BEA: Bald Eagle Area swept Hollidaysburg (25-19, 25-23, and 25-19) on Thursday. Stat leaders for the Eagles were: Megan Reese with 25 assists; Claire Andrews with 9 kills; Ava Stere and Maddie Guenot each with 7 kills; Peighton Brownson with 3 aces; and Olivia Boone with 23 digs.
