Here are 5 takeaways from Week 5 of Centre County high school football

Week 5 of Centre County high school football had its highs and lows for each program.

Bellefonte’s Senior Night was spoiled by a 48-0 loss to Clearfield. Bald Eagle defeated Penns Valley 14-0. State College lost 34-13 against Commonwealth League foe Central Dauphin East. Philipsburg-Osceola won its homecoming game 21-14 against Moshannon Valley.

Let’s take a look at five takeaways from the fifth week of the 2021 high school football season in Centre County.

Clearfield can’t be stopped and Bellefonte can’t get started

Bellefonte has only scored 22 points this season. All of those 22 points came against Philipsburg-Osceola in an early home game, and even the Mountaineers now have far more points this season. It’s not an ideal situation for the Raiders, who have shown that they can play fast. The question is whether they can step up and get points on the board on the offensive side of the ball, where they only have six points all year.

Moving Garrett Burns to running back full time paid off

Burns had 32 carries for 279 rushing yards against Penns Valley in a 14-0 victory on Friday night. At the beginning of the season, there was debate over whether Burns would spend more time a quarterback or running back, with freshman QB Carson Nagle entering the program. While Nagle has impressed so far at quarterback, Burns’ athleticism at running back showed up in a big way against the Rams. Burns is an outstanding running back and showed that on Friday.

Once State College is healthy, it can make a strong playoff run

Not many times in a 34-13 loss would one think that a team was fairly even. That was the case in State College’s loss to Central Dauphin East. The Little Lions fought hard and quarterback Finn Furmanek had another multi-touchdown performance with two rushing scores. He was banged up, so was the Little Lions offensive line. So were their skill position players. While the injuries stacked up, State College hung in there and would’ve made the game closer with more speed on the outside, which it should be getting back soon.

Penns Valley has a legit defense

Holding Bald Eagle Area to 14 points is no easy task. That’s exactly what Penns Valley did on Friday night in a 14-0 loss. If the offense matches the defensive play, Penns Valley can get some big things done in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year.

Philipsburg-Osceola nabs a big win against Moshannon Valley

Philipsburg-Osceola (2-3) has overcome injury issues and tight games this season, and has the chance to continue building. It’s not an easy task to get multiple wins with the amount of injuries that the Mounties have had, but the Wing-T worked to perfection and the defense stood strong on Friday.
